Wonderfully engaging, Julia Chapman’s latest Dales mystery is perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club series . But in this book, everything fits - and I really think that the author did great work connecting the dots of a complex mystery backstory spread across all the previous books.Ida Capstick, the newly appointed member of the investigations team, is distracted by her brother George’s belief that their farm is haunted. This latest instalment had the now expected mix of mystery, comedy and acutely observed village life.

Great descriptions of the landscape, characters and the shenanigans of the locals who inhabit her pages. This works as a stand-alone but I think familiarity with past events would have added to my enjoyment. It will be interesting to see the TV series if/when that happens, but make sure you read the books first if you can. In the eighth novel in the Dales Detective series, Date with Evil, Samson and Delilah are about to discover that all of their new cases may be connected to a network of evil that seems to be surrounding Bruncliffe. I loved Delilah and Samson together, they turn out to be a really good combo – good for each other and their business.
