At startup, viewers are taken to a generic static screen with the usual options along the bottom and music playing in the background. Some of the film's humor is aimed squarely at adolescents, and it does not play as well with me today. Inventor Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) strolls through Chinatown looking for a gift for his son, Billy (Zach Galligan).

The expanded contrast really shines in truly dark daytime shadows and bright nighttime Christmas lights. For the purpose of the movie Jerry comes up with not just the perfect moodset and emotion to go with the scenes but he goes from mellow, feelgood, and relaxing all the way to freaky and menacing without missing a beat. Despite all the obvious inspiration, however, Gizmo and Stripe remain unique contributions to popular culture, hybrid creatures merged from a strange brew of World War II in-jokes, old movie references and anxieties, not to mention the distinctive vocal chops of Welker and Howie Mandel. It’s not a whole lot of extras but it does still manage to do its job, especially if you’ve never taken the time to listen or view them before or it is your first time seeing this film. There’s even a character in the film who served in the military (we assume as a pilot) that is constantly cursing foreign parts and cars, claiming they have gremlins. Who wouldn't want one in their house and record those lovable furballs for hours as they play toy trumpets, hum to their heart's content and model a Santa hat. Dante’s horror roots are clearly on show (the mother’s dispatching of the Gremlins in the kitchen) while Spielberg’s whimsy filters through (Gizmo riding a car through the carnage) and yet combined, they produce a story that is both scary and family orientated and best typified by the Gremlins in the bar scene, which could be considered a microcosm for the whole.

Randall tells his wife and son “Billy Peltzer” ( Zach Galligan) there are three strict rules he must follow to take care of the Mogwai.
