About this deal

So in my (re)view this is what you want in a Sir Terry novel, pathos, love, heroics, honesty, modesty, drunkenness, dragons (big and small), Ankh Morpork, wizards, The Librarian, CMOT Dibbler, The Shades, The Mended Drum and above all humour, lots of humour. Note that Soul Cake Thursday in later Discworld novels becomes Soul Cake Tuesday, after previously having been Soul Cake Friday in The Dark Side of the Sun.

If we shoot back to 1999 (ten years after the book was first published) I asked my Dad to get me Guards! What can be a hotter hobby than dragon breeding and thereby showing the crudeness and indirect woof woof elitism and pure breed racism that once was decent enough for humans too.Terry Pratchett was the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983. Laughing with a Pratchett book is the norm, his trademark, unless you have a stuffed and cobweb-filled sense of humor, in which case get checked by a good one. Carrot's policing style is reminiscent of traditional idealized portrayals of British police, but astoundingly, it actually seems to work. Vimes replays here one of the best-known scenes in Clint Eastwood's first 'Dirty Harry' movie, the 1971 Dirty Harry.

The only thing Pratchett keeps sacred is books and libraries, all else is fair game for biting sarcasm! The whole novel is tongue-in-cheek and it's a slight bit more delightful (IMHO) than all the rest of the novels that came before it.I am, at the moment, not really a friend of thrillers and the crime genre, but readers strongly invested in such literature might find much more innuendos and connotations. The Discworld is a lot of fun but it is also a comedic examination of humanity and civilization and it takes a master of Pratchett’s genius talent to pull it off successfully. The Archchancellor's rant is a very good approximation of a David Attenborough wildlife programme narration.

Terry's latest book, Nation, a non-Discworld standalone YA novel was published in October of 2008 and was an instant New York Times and London Times bestseller. So when Carrot, who was raised by dwarves and actually considers himself to be one, volunteers for duty, everyone is confused. Clever and funny; a little bit of social commentary with an edge, both are particularly skilled in word games. To reintegrate monarchy in a more or less functional system, some conservatives have the ridiculous plan to use some magic, they think they have in control, which escalates to epic failing and becoming victims instead. Bristol has become famous for its urban foxes (although they apparently operate in all largish greenish cities in the UK). I loved the humour and crazy, absurd events, but also the philosophical lining that added so much more depth and made it more than just a funny book. Just bear in mind that I'm first in line if Captain Vimes becomes available, so keep your inevitable crush on him to yourself.
