About this deal

It may simply have been that the administrative and political systems of the empires had become etiquette-bound, rigidified and overloaded, unable to keep up with the demands and challenges of imperial rule. and was delighted to learn, for instance, that Pythagoras was not the author of the well-known mathematical theorem; moreover, that he never wrote a word but was a highly inspirational figure, with many followers.

In certain cases Adam, strikes a better balance, for instance, in the chapter on Pythagoras, Adams is able to master fully describe the background of the city and how external factors played an important role in shaping the philosophy of the Pythagorean cult as well as describe the central tenets of Pythagoras' philosophy. In Tyre itself, a city of 20,000 inhabitants in 900 BC, where the water was piped to fountains within its walls, they made a 15-acre harbour basin, protected against all winds and raiders, next to a marketplace and with a channel that led to an inner harbour for extra safety. Interesting exploration of the earliest Greek philosophers who have shaped much of our modern thought, Nicolson uses geography as well as history and literature to bring the ideas of early philosophers to light, arguing that they share a sort of harbor mind (linking land and sea). Through the questioning voyager Odysseus, Homer explored how we might navigate our way through the world. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. To imagine large geopolitical change as human experience is difficult, partly because it occurs on a far from personal scale and over time spans that stretch beyond the individual life. This is a readable and engaging book charts the rise of philosophy in the Ionian islands and coastal towns. The three realms of self, city and cosmos are the points of a triangle within which a coherent understanding can be found.

Thank you to NetGalley, 4th Estate and William Collins and to Adam Nicolson for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The atmosphere was in its way not unlike those of the giant quasi-autocracies of the twentieth century and of China now.Nicolson ( The Life Between the Tides) illuminates in this meditative account the vital influence geography had on the evolution of Greek philosophy from the 11th to the 5th centuries BCE, arguing that places gave rise to frames of mind that served as wellsprings of new ideas . years ago, in a succession of small eastern Mediterranean harbour-cities, that way of thinking began to change. Sparkling with maps, photographs and artwork, How to Be is a journey into the origins of Western thought. I think the title suggests a bit more of a self-help book and thus slightly mis-represents this mix of philosophy and history.
