About this deal

A compelling tale of adventure, coming to terms with life's end, and profound grief, finished magnificently after his death by sister Katie Carr. I loved this book - the storytelling is magical the images and environments it paints so vividly are beautiful. Lyrical descriptions, engaging reporting of meetings with the people he meets on his travels, scary episodes in rougher seas that ordinarily would give me nightmares, all come together to make this a thoroughly delightful and compulsive read.

Use this tool to build your own journey or choose from an exciting range of specially selected tours. Lots to learn and some amazing places visited and it has definitely spurred me to want to see more of the world once more and live for the moment. Sounds like he had an amazing ability to connect with people where ever he was and bring them into his challenge. This a great book for anyone who loves the outdoors, the sea and adventure whether in life or from the arm chair as well as a story of personal challenge and heartbreak.

There is something special about people experiencing loss who decide to make the most of life while they still have the opportunity. This is an amazing book, so well crafted by Katie from his notes, audio recordings, blogs and messages and it was a pleasure to have had a chance to have read it and join Toby on this adventure. The reason for 3 stars is I found the first and last thirds enjoyable but the middle 100 pages ish I found repetitive in their descriptions and sometimes lost where we were, how he got there, where the car suddenly appears from, even which year it is. From the wildness and peace of the sea, looking back at the land, Toby hoped to gain the strength and balance he knew nature could provide and to discover what anchors us to each other. Having seen the map I was amazed by the scale of his project, doing all these areas in a tiny wee boat?Written by Toby's sister Katie from his extensive notes and recordings after his untimely death, Moderate Becoming Good Later is both an epic adventure - sometimes choppy, constantly moving - and a personal voyage of discovery that includes old friends and new, plenty of wildlife, and the ever-present sea.

The authors’ light touch when describing his heath problems don’t hide the fact that this is also a very sad tale, but one in which hope and joy shine through. Thank you to Netgalley, the authors and publishers for a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Right away you get an idea of what sort of person Toby was, calmly dealing with bureaucracy, meeting strangers and instantly making new friends, Toby had that rare ability to find the most generous people just when he needed it. Thrilling and moving in equal parts, it should inspire us all to get out into the world and embrace its beauty.A beautiful, poignant but ultimately uplifting reminder to us that life is an adventure and we need to snatch every minute before it's gone. But I got tired of being thrown from one place to the other, sometimes multiple ones in one paragraph (especially in the last chapters) like all he was doing was kayaking as fast as he could and not stopping to admire where he was which I know wasn't true. It is sad he never got to see the book but I think he would be very proud of his sister showing the world what an amazing man he was.
