About this deal

Sage machines sell as Breville outside of Europe, but the Breville brand in the UK is completely different, and the Breville Barista range in the UK, despite looking and sounding spookily similar, are not the same machines. Please note that some used Sage items will come with a 6 month warranty, but this will be specified in the listing. I say that the Barista Express hits 3 out of Sage's “4 Keys” formula, because it doesn't have a 9 bar OPV, and if I'm talking gobbledygook, don't worry, I'll translate ;-).

Re leaving the stuff in the bowl, you can leave it for as long as you like really depending on how dirty it is, overnight won’t do any harm but an hour or so is probably plenty. The other machine you might be considering if you're thinking of the Barista Express, is the Touch Impress, so I'll just briefly explain how this compares. Overall, I was both very impressed and very unimpressed at the same time, by the La Specialista Arte'.If you ask me, the portafilter size is of little consequence to shot quality, all things considered – but, where I'd be more concerned is the availability of aftermarket accessories.

If you’re thinking of something like up to 20 or so double espressos per day, the machine would be fine with that, but if you might do this within a period of just a few hours and a lot of them are cappuccino, flat white or latte for instance, you may find a machine like this will be too slow, as you can’t steam milk and pull shots at the same time, as you would if you were using a dual boiler or heat exchanger machine which allows you to pull shots while you’re steaming milk. Let me just start out by making sure you're aware that these Breville machines have nothing to with Sage. The Barista Pro also makes a bit less of a song and dance about cooling the heater after steaming milk. The Barista Express comes with the Razor tool, a really clever little device that is used after tamping to ensure the precise dose. The Barista Express™ allows you to grind the beans right before extraction for full flavour and precise temperature control (PID) ensures optimal espresso extraction. It has the over-pressure valve set to 9 bars, it has 30 grind settings (plus the additional internal burr adjustment) and it has the Etzinger burrs. Rotate the STEAM / HOT WATER dial to the STEAM position and run steam through the steam wand for 10 seconds. There's no pressure gauge with the Barista Pro, but in my humble opinion, you really don't need a pressure gauge. While there are an increasing number of people now who have the skills and the gear to use lighter roasted coffee beans for espresso, if you're using an entry level setup – and certainly if you're using an integrated grinder espresso machine, you'd be very well advised to stick to espresso roast beans.
