There were certainly times I got bored when there was a flashback chapter about something but overall the tension is built up really nicely. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. The pacing of this book was magnificent, something I struggle with in my own writing, as well as the characterizations.

It's more of a story of teenagers, with a little eerie feeling throughout, and some beautiful prose about what it feels like to be a teen. Kasischke's take on an urban legend through the lives of three teenage girls and the boys they touch is riveting. However, it did really pick up at the end for a super creepy campfire read, as long as you cut out most of it.BUT that didn't bother me ~ there was just A LOT of sex going down and general cheer-leading bitchiness that I find tiresome to read (I don't find sulky teenagers that appealing, although the main character was fine). Boy Heaven by Laura Kasischke is a modern-day urban legend that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until they reach the shocking conclusion.

Overall, if this book were made into a movie that stayed true to the original text, it would be rated R for sure, and not just because of the flashing scene toward the beginning. Boy Heaven is a provocative, page-turning mystery, and a must-read for anyone who loves an urban legend. The twist and the ending of this book was fantastic, something I personally haven't come across before or since reading this ten years ago, and I would love to have been able to love the entirety of the story, I'm sad that I just can't. the tension kept building and i thought this would be a great alternative to those horrid Goosebumps series that my daughter likes to read.As we drove, the breeze made a smothering whoosh around us, and the air smelled like a Pink Pearl eraser I used to keep on my desk in elementary school--immaculate (Iused to hold that eraser to my nose when I was bored, breathe in the dense pink dust, which had rubbed away hundreds of my mistakes and still smelled clean). Regarding the mystery/creepy stuff ~ there's some fabulous foreshadowing and bouts of paranoia and scenes that just reek of tension. With Kristy, she’s revered because she’s pretty and nice, but she’s not the prettiest—that’s Desiree, who doesn’t even have any other friends because she’s, as Kristy admits herself, Desiree is a slut. Beside me, Desiree was casual and gorgeous, and when we passed other cars, the drivers, who'd caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of their eyes, would snap their heads around to look at her again.

Il est toujours remarquable de construire un roman, même court, sur une trame presque secondaire face aux fils d'anecdotes dont le récit est tissé. I wasn't beautiful, the way she was (I knew that, too), or dazzling like the other Kristi in my backseat, with her red hair and black-lashed green eyes--but I had what I wanted out of life for the moment: long hair, big blue eyes, rosy cheeks, a good tan, a white smile, big-enough breasts, and a little red convertible. Perfect, sunny days do not happen often, so why waste the chance to get a good tan and chill on the beach? Except that an all girls cheerleader camp does not sound as much fun as the Lutheran bible camp I went to, amirite? From the beginning of the novel, when Kristy is awakened by the cry of a cicada that has lit on her cabin's screen window, to the end, Kasischke ratchets up the suspense.Now the girls feel prying eyes on them all the time—during pep practice, on the path through the woods, outside the window of their cabin.
