About this deal

There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. I am currently on maternity leave since my little one was born in July, but just before she arrived, I handed in my third book, which will be published in February 2024. Not only is Mariajo Ilustrajo’s storytelling deft and attention grabbing, but the way she sequences the story, with huge landscape images against comic style intimate commentary, is assured. One of the comments you made in a video was about how the story began with a hippo leaving the taps on.

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. After many years working as an illustrator / designer, her passion for picture books led her to study a MA in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art and graduated in 2021. Former Klaus Flugge Prize judge, Senior Lecturer in Education: Primary English and Children's Literature, Mat Tobin interviewed Mariajo about her book.

Could you tell us a little about current and future projects and what we can look forward to reading from you in the future.

The hippo leaving the taps open is a bit reminiscent of the early development when I was building the story and I was questioning why the city became flooded. Of course, then I didn’t know what an illustrator was, but during high school I had the opportunity to visit the art school Arte 10 in Madrid and I fell in love with it. You can see it as an allegory for climate change but the attitudes and responses would fit with how to face and deal with any large problem that seems difficult to solve. When sharing this book with my class, it really made them think and predict about how the animal’s problem could be solved. Can you talk us through how you went about making this choice and whether you experimented with other colour concepts first?Rising water turns from a little problem into a big problem but they realise if they work together they.
