About this deal

This was a fantastic book dealing with real issues that we all have, or know someone who has experienced.

White also shines a light on the true realities of early motherhood and isn’t afraid to show that it isn’t all cute insta friendly matching outfits and smiles.I couldn't put it down but it also made me desperately sad for the characters and for myself as it echoed experiences I've had.

Lexi and Amanda are childhood friends who co-host a podcast where Amanda's brashness tends to get them in trouble with their fanbase. I recently heard one of those rare Republican never-Trumpers, Adam Kitzinger, talking on the Bill Maher show, about how his family had decided he was the devil for having turned on Trump. Eventually their worlds collide as they try to navigate their messy friendships to figure out what’s worth saving and where they need to start again. It's really dark especially for this kind of novel but it's desperately important and I can't applaud the novel enough for taking these brave steps. With these three characters, Sophie White depicts modern life with many of its damaging and complex layers.Could be the cover which seems a little frivolous when in fact this book goes deeply into toxic friendships, mental health and relationships in a way that is very genuinely funny and will have you nodding along and highlighting something every chapter. My thanks, then as now, to the inestimable Garo Nahoulakhian for wigging out on guitar at the end of the song like his very life depended upon it… and the ever-mighty 🥁 sticks-work of Mike Monaghan, who knew how to unleash the controlled madness that our Satanic overlords would surely insist upon. Claire's worried that her old friends are talking about her behind her back - things haven't been the same since her bad spell the previous year.

I just found it an extremely relatable book and I kept finding myself relating certain aspects of it back to my own life and I just loved that. The little nods to the Creeps elicited an excited giggle and at an early point I did shout “Poo butter!Aside from the overall theme of friendship, the book explores some major topics, including mental illness, relationship problems, the struggles around motherhood, forgiveness and acceptance. Funny, fierce and feisty — this unputdownable adventure is a whip-smart and brutally authentic look into the complexity of female friendships, and the pressures of growing into a woman in a world that never considers them good enough for their double standards. Last we have Claire whose friends (and the WhatsApp name for the group - Bitch Herd - should tip you off to their true nature) seem to be pulling away after an incident the year before which we don't learn the true nature of until the last third of the book.
