Dash cams will generally require an SD card that's class 10 or higher - this means you can record moving images and audio! With this in mind, we sent the good people at The Independent one of our best-selling Dash Cams, the 412GW, for testing.
I had a transit connect which I hardwired with the wires routed passenger side, DAB stopped working and the FM was weaker than usual.
The alternative is a hard-wired wiring set up; hooking the power mount into the ignition circuit and keeping the wires out of sight. IN-BUILT G-SENSOR AND NIGHT VISION: The inbuilt G-Sensor is used to lock away important files from the result of an impact as the cam works on an auto-loop feature. The 3 min lo-res (800x480) copy is only 75mb - much easier to transmit to your smartphone and amend as required. Originally I bought the rear camera that plugs into the 512, but found this spoilt the resolution of the front camera. Minor drawbacks - it often protects a segment if driving over a road lump or similar and when handling it, the on/off button is so placed that it can easily be triggered.The Nextbase 412GW is an excellent dash cam that’s easy to install and will capture great-quality video evidence should you ever need it. The 412GW has exceptional night vision capabilities, meaning that the high quality footage will continue through the night. Exporting as 4K will have affected it slightly (it is higher resolution than HD so I didn't want to reduce the quality by exporting in HD so I exported as 4K which means the video will be affected slightly. To benefit from these improvements and updates, please check your dash cam's firmware and update it if there is an update available. You can use the bundled power cable to attach it to your car’s accessory socket, but as our Ford Focus doesn’t cut power to this when you turn off the ignition, we installed the Nextbase hardwire kit.
Choose the 112 and the 212 for ultra compact, entry level models that are user friendly and affordable. Upgrades over the earlier model include higher resolution footage, a quick-release magnetic mount and WiFi connectivity, so footage can be accessed via a smartphone. I also have a heated front windscreen that can make some detail look a bit blurry - particularly in low light conditions. You can also live stream what the camera is currently recording - very handy in determining the position of the Dash Cam on the windscreen. The 412GW records in up to 1440P at 30 frames per second, but it’s perhaps at its best in 1080P at 60 frames per second, which provides extremely clear, crisp, fluid video. When reviewing footage on a desktop, you are able to see the vehicles location data on the screen, providing court admissible video evidence. The supplied 4m power lead is a good length to feed around the door frame and windscreen although, as with many other in-car devices, the lead is fitted into its own 12V plug meaning that if you need to use a phone charger or satnav then you’ll have to invest in a splitter for the power socket.
