About this deal

Brown wrote the book with the help of Kathleen McGurl, a historical fiction author who has written 13 books of her own, including a forthcoming novel. She regularly contributes to the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, PureWow, and TripSavvy , and is the author of two books. Nothing special whatsoever in terms of language and writing style (I feel like I could’ve written it? This is a historical fiction, set during the events of WWII, following the real life events as lived by Millie’s grandparents.

Millie’s family supplied the inspiration, but it was McGurl that sat down and did the work for the novel. The reason I bring up that comparison is because at least one comment was concerned this is something only brought up for young up and coming women, and that is simply not the case. Just when Nellie begins to embrace an exciting new life with Ray, a terrible incident occurs during an air raid one evening, tearing Nellie’s world is torn apart.

I truly did not expect some of the more tragic twists in her personal story - often in similar stories they happen to secondary characters rather than primary characters - and by the time you get to part three, you'll be entirely wrung out. I understand that the ideas came from Millie Bobby Brown and whilst also appreciating that the book will gain more sales with her name on it, I do believe that Kathleen McGurl deserves a lot of credit for this. Even the closest family can't escape the devastation of war, and as the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart.Issues between the local council and government led to 173 civilian deaths on the evening of 3 March 1943. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Full of heartbreak and hope, and overflowing with vibrant characters you'll root hard for, Nineteen Steps will plunge you into the 1940s East End and will stay in your heart for a long time to come. Nineteen Steps follows in the footsteps of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See by dramatizing something that really happened in the East London community-driven, lower-class neighborhood of Bethnal Green in 1943.
