About this deal

After battling, if Vikings occupy a City Shire and no English units are present, the Vikings take a Viking Control marker from the lowest space on the Victory track at the bottom of the board and place it on the City Shire. The massive invading Vikings under the command of their leaders is a size-able force to reckon with. This fits perfectly in the camp of being a game we can play during a weeknight after the little one is in bed, and be finished and have it put away with time to spare before bed.

If the ‘English’ defenders go first then their opportunity to react to the Viking invasion is stymied. In the first round of battle, the first hit against the Viking player must be taken as a Berserker since they would rush into the thick of a battle). For example, if there are only 2 Thegn units in a given Battle, they can only roll 2 dice, not their maximum 3. If this ability is used properly, one Viking faction player can do considerable damage to the English and then leave the Leader token well positioned to do some more damage on the other Viking faction player’s turn. You will not easily reach your 40 Thegn unit limit, so even though the Housecarls are stronger units than the Thegn, don’t be afraid to choose to lose some Housecarls.

You’re not exactly keen on canceling a decisive campaign just because you can’t find your Viking ship tokens, are you? The Vikings will often get 4 or more Hits when they roll, so unless I have a lot of Fyrd left after my first roll, I will command-decision anyone I can to fight another day. While the English are forced to defend after the Vikings decide where they will invade with their huge armies, there are several ways that you as the English player can mitigate and sometimes even control which strategy the Viking players use.This game system turned out to be a pleasant delight, and has me very interested in checking out some of the others like 1754 – Conquest: The French and Indian War (which I know she’ll like, because of the Indians). Killing one more Berserker will result in the Vikings rolling fewer than 2 Berserker dice, which can mean doom for a Viking leader. The Battle system is simple but fairly clever and you really have to have a good understanding of the dice makeup of each of your units involved.
