About this deal

This freaks him out quite a bit when he wakes up, since he thinks Cora, who he finds terrifying, did it on purpose. Cora and the alien strike a wary alliance, as Cora wants to reunite with her abducted family members while the alien needs a human interpreter. She neither knows nor cares whether her fathers leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with himuntil she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades. She begins to do so, but doubles back when she realizes that Obelus has found Ampersand and is attempting to negotiate. There's a very good chance the Superorganism, the amygdaline government, will invade and sterilize the Earth within the next century.

The Heavy: "Similars" like Obelus are huge amygdalines who specialize in combat and other dangerous tasks. Ampersand notes that, within a few centuries, the amygdaline race will likely attempt genocide against humanity as well. Ever since she’d started temping here a couple of weeks ago, Eli had been one of the first people who had taken a special interest in her, and for the worst possible reasons. In a cast of CIA, federal agents, and aliens, it is pretty risky to make your Human Protagonist/Audience Stand In so ordinary. The Fremda, who don't have the algorithm, don't know any English, not that most of them are interested in learning it anyway.

Obelus abducts Cora and the other amygdalines as insurance in exchange for Ampersand bringing Obelus the Genome. touching on issues of prejudice and xenophobia along the way, Axiom s End is the engaging first volume of a projected series. Of note, "Fremda" is an adjective meaning "foreign", "Ĉefo" is a noun meaning "chief" and "Esperas" is the present tense verb form of "to wait". Humans Advance Swiftly: Ampersand explicitly states that humanity is advancing much more rapidly than his own ancestors did.I have seen the first few movies, and this is a lot better at exploring a similar concept and plot points, but going off in an original direction.

I feel like if I knew I was being spied on or phone tapped or followed, I wouldn’t even know how to function.A whistleblower goes public with evidence that the US government has been in communication with an alien intelligence and flees to Germany. Lindsay Ellis's storytelling is what good science fiction should be: smart but heartfelt, full of profound ideas delivered with a sense of humanity. The force driving this controversy is Cora's whistleblower father, and even though she hasn't spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the Internet, the paparazzi, and the government and redirected it to her. The words “ The Broken Seal” sent a sharp icicle through her chest, and she momentarily forgot about the tail. I'm definitely looking forward to the follow-up to this introductory book, and I really don't know what to expect story-wise.

Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. And there is also a third amygdaline subspecies, one that is only mentioned in passing and is referred to as "non-biological". There will be sequels - the book is touted as the first in the Noumena sequence - but the book has a fair amount of closure to it and no immediate cliffhangers. The Amygdaline relationship model shown is closest to a polycule, though it's explicitly noticed that there's a level of intimacy involved that doesn't translate to human understanding.

This contrast reveals another ability of the mechanical components: the ability to live on a planet whose atmospheric nitrogen would kill an unmodified amigdaline. Cora wonders why Ampersand doesn't seem more upset about autopsying Ĉefo, a Fremda who dies by suicide at the beginning of the book, since they were friends.
