About this deal

The book is a great stalwart teacher in aid to becoming more and more what the Lord sees capable in us and of us.

Butler's great work, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints ("Butler's Lives"), the result of thirty years study, was first published in four volumes in London, 1756–1759.It only took me about six years to make my journey to Catholicism and this book was one of the first paths that I embarked upon. Very few published works require such a lengthy explanation of exactly WHICH edition is being offered, in what format, and why, than Fr. Butler's Lives of the Saints includes information on a variety of men and women who lived the gospel-from the first to the twentieth century-from such diverse areas as Western and Eastern Europe, and the Near East.

Important features of this version include mention of recently canonized saints as well as those whose path to official sainthood is still in progress. Since then the text has been updated to include saints who have been canonized by the Catholic Church after that period. Having read through the book once, I now look forward to being reacquainted with each new day's Saint. My friend Paula gave me her mother's copy of "Lives of Saints" which is big, thick and really gruesome. You have to admire the raw courage of the martyrs and confessors who defied the persecutors to their faces, but it must have taken enormous resolve not to back down under such horrendous tortures.Alban Butler was born in 1710, at Appletree, Aston le Walls, Northamptonshire, the second son of Simon Butler, Esq. Butler's Lives of the Saints is the most revered Catholic book after the Bible, the Missal and The Imitation of Christ.

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Saints, presents to the reader the life story of over 1600 saints and their times. In 1745, Butler came to the attention of the Duke of Cumberland, younger son of King George II, for his devotion to the wounded English soldiers during the defeat at the Battle of Fontenoy. Butler goes off on enormous tangents in his descriptions, often spending dozens of pages describing a war, a political situation or a heresy that happened during the life of the saint without really affecting the saint directly. It does not come with a cardboard sleeve of any kind to tuck the books together for on-shelf storage purposes, in case you might be wondering about this but I wasn't really expecting one. Families and individuals will find it serves as a source of devotions and adds to their spirituality and prayer life. An interesting collection of short biographies of various saints, arranged so that there is one per day of the year. Loreto Publications has here reproduced the finest original edition of the text from the early 19th century with no modernization, alterations, deletions, or additions to the product of Father Butler. Clear Creek became an abbey in 2010 and counts 55 monks, who devote themselves to God alone in the hidden life, in silence and solitude, in constant prayer and willing penance.

Some major entries include: Aidan of Lindisfarne, Ambrose, Anselm, Antony of Egypt, Bernadette of Boniface, Columba of Iona, Cuthbert, Don Bosco, Francis Xavier, Hildegard of Bingen, Teresa of Avila and Thomas Becket. When a reader completes all of the articles, he or she has a very good grasp, not just of hagiography, but also of Church history. Donald Attwater (24 December 1892–30 January 1977) was a British Catholic author, editor and translator, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Notre Dame. What an amazing Journey in my reading of “Lives of the Saints” by Alban Butler; treasures I will hold in my heart for many years to come teaching me so much about the paved path before me. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there is something for every literary palate. For those who value freedom and science as well as their Christian faith, this edition is a valuable contribution. Now, in this new edition of the original classic, Michael Walsh has culled the ruch resources of earlier editions to accentuate the more modern and best-documented saints. Loreto Publications has utilized the recent development of OCR scanning to extract the original text and to put it into a modern, highly readable, and much larger font typeface than any of the old editions. The book, first published in the nineteenth century, also serves as a valuable introduction the early history of the Catholic Church and the fundamental (and sacrificial) roles some of the founders of the church played to ensure the continuation and development of the Church into modern times.
