Written with Lewis’s signature authenticity and dramatic verve, SAS Ghost Patrol is peopled by a cast of the utterly maverick and the extraordinary. Known as 'The Secret Hunters, this force was peopled by a cast more extraordinary than any fiction: Captain Henry Druce, who waged war from his jeep in a silk top hat and corduroys; Russian Prince Yurka Galitzine, the fabulously well-connected grandmaster of black operations. World War II aficionados and historians are sure to enjoy Lewis’s latest book, his contributions to military history and World War II history, and Brothers in Arms is an amazing addition to the existing literature on the topic.

A few times, I expected to look up to find myself in a jeep speeding across the African desert, avoiding an attack from the Axis troops. The battle scenes are described brilliantly, and we get a far truer idea of what the men were actually like. Among his other acclaimed works is Slave, an international bestseller that was adapted into a film and play. When the fuses for their explosives failed, they adapted their tactics using ‘gangster style’ drive by shootings to attack enemy aircraft.

SAS BAND OF BROTHERS is replete with action, peppered with great characters, and features two of the most daring escapes of WWII.Well, few know more about the heroics, history and histrionics surrounding Robert Blair Mayne, someone whom fellow soldier Joe Welch described as ". A rightfully proud regiment with an unrivalled esprit de corps, they were disavowed as unruly by top brass, unyieldingly vaunted by Churchill, and courageously loyal to the clandestine “butcher and bolt” raids that made their sacrifices—and their triumphs—legendary. Once started it is extremely difficult to put this one down and as a result I have not only read the book from cover to cover but I have also listened to it twice on audible! These men lived for months with little sleep, little water, little food and always, sand, everywhere sand, and the pictures shows them ragged, bearded, dirty and battered.

In fact, most of the men who volunteered for the SAS during the time this book covers, 1941-1943, were unlikely to thrive under normal military life.He skillfully weaves together the political, military, and personal threads to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the British special forces during this darkest hour.
