About this deal

Graham’s Granda Reid is a proud Orangeman who wants Graham to march in the big Orange Walk which is coming up. From trendy coastal areas to the nation’s heartland, cities are seeing levels of growth beyond the wildest visions of only a few decades ago. His very name will mark him out as the enemy, so he's introduced as Gregory (like the Popes) in great haste and there's some comedy attached to this masquerade. And yet, most of the attention — and the funding — goes not to buses, but to their far more glamorous cousins, light rail and trolleys. This isn't a preachy novel, but if there is a message it's this: if we want to understand one another, perhaps the best way is through the young.

Listen to the conversation from the Town Hall Seattle site or from the Island Press Soundcloud account. Graham is still concerned that the police will be looking for him, so he goes to Joe's family's hairdressing salon and allows Joe to put streaks into his hair.He goes to a catholic school, and he even got to visit a non denominational school to discuss tolerance between different religions. So begins a compulsive contemporary novel, exploring traditional tensions between Protestants and Catholic football supporters plus the plight of asylum seekers adrift in the city.

If he began to run the gang of boys would think he was running from them – might mistake him for the one they were after. This leads to Graham almost by accident involving another boy from training, Joe Flaherty (who is of course from across the sectarian divide to which the book’s title mainly refers) in finding Leanne’s house. The danger of a novel so closely associated with a real place is that the accompanying press attention could distract from the writing. It also made me aware of just how far Glasgow and Scotland have come in integration of different peoples over the last 20 years.
