About this deal

Interestingly, Vine Street is a small, nondescript cul-de-sac, making it perhaps the most obscure location on the whole board. The list above only includes the streets, not all of the squares on the board as there’s also stations, utilities, chance and community chest, the Go space, Free Parking, Go to Jail and Jail. The London version of the game was successful, and in 1936 it was exported to Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, [4] becoming the de facto standard board in the British Commonwealth. There are 26 places and station on the board along with GO being named as Lambeth North tube station by Ordnance Survey during their assistance with the UK version.

Only one street on the board even touches the ancient city walls: Fleet Street, formerly Fleet Bridge Street, but which, since 1769, has merely bridged the drain channelling the largest of London’s now subterranean rivers into the Thames. Monopoly name and character, as well as each of the distinctive elements of the board and playing pieces are trademarks of Hasbro. We are by now flagging – and a couple of pints in a Clerkenwell pub have probably done nothing to lift our energy levels – and we cheat the end of our round of the board.Chic restaurants and grimy boozers stand feet from each other, and loft-dwellers share the streets with council tenants (this was one of the earliest areas of London to have municipal housing). Watson took his secretary, Marjory Phillips, on a day-trip from their head office in Leeds to London to scout out suitable locations for the London-based Monopoly board. The newspapers are long gone, of course, all scattered to Canary Wharf and King's Cross and Victoria, but if Fleet Street is no longer the Street of Ink, it remains the Street of Drink, with Ye Olde Cock Tavern and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese battling it out for the title of Ye Oldest pub on the strip.

And this year a documentary about the game, Under the Boardwalk, won the audience award for best documentary at the Anaheim film festival. Bow Street is named after London’s first professional police force, the Bow Street Runners, Marlborough Street after Marlborough Street Magistrates Court, and Vine Street after Vine Street Police Station. You get some sense of legacy from the movement of the bohemians into Notting Hill in the 60s, or artists moving to Hackney and London Fields in the 70s. To find out more about the locations on the London Monopoly board, I recommend that you take a look at the book Do Not Pass Go by Tim Waddington. It’s a fun way to experience real life Monopoly, provided you are sensible when drinking as that is a lot of pubs to visit!Today, Monopoly has been translated into 43 different languages and is sold in over 111 different countries worldwide. Started at whitechapel, did liverpool st and fenchurch, then old kent rd, up to fleet street, did the middle bits, then marylebone, ending at angel islington. It’s located in the City of Westminster and is the westernmost of all of the UK Monopoly properties.
