About this deal

Lilias has an unreasonable fear of bones, so much so, that all knives and sharp tools must be hidden as she has a tendency to want to cut her bones out of her body. These dolls then inspired Alex Bell to weave this macabre story and I really like it when books use real elements in their plot, I feel it gives a little nod of authenticity to the tale. Some of the chapters were a little overly long for my taste, which meant the book was little slow to start off with but the pacing definitely got better in the latter half of the book. I am fascinated by how many readers of my age are reading books from that genre – I reckon it all started with age-specific edition of Harry Potter, but HUNGER GAMES may be more of an influence (I just thought it was a bit too much like Logan’s Run to be honest …). And although it didn’t necessarily scare me, there were definitely scenes that REALLY creeped me out and had me glancing over my shoulder.

Intent on finding Lola, Drew finds help in an unlikely ally, Lola’s best friend, Autumn, who is the sheriff’s daughter. The ratings for this book are pretty up there, so maybe everyone else just got something from this book that I didn't. To that end she eagerly started a Law Degree only to find it so boring that she was at a very real risk of going completely insane. Considering this is a young adult book, there are some very gruesome scenes and ideas scattered throughout – both physical and psychological. Brooding Cameron with his scarred hand, strange Lillias with a fear of bones and Piper, who seems just a bit too good to be true.Motivated by a giant spoiler, Sophie heads off to the Isle of Skye to stay with the cousins she hasn't seen since she was young. The family live in a remote location, up in an old school-house on the cliffs (which locals believe has been the site of several other suspicious accidents, besides Rebecca Craig’s, in its time), and they don’t seem to have much contact with other people besides one another. Her cheerful tone had disappeared for the first time since I’d arrived so I didn’t dare ask any more questions. The fact that the are real and that they have the rhyme that goes through the chapters of the book is even more creepy. Even Sophie eventually forgot that she found it suspicious and just moved on to the mysteries with her cousins and the Frozen Charlotte dolls.

Online articles about the case and interview transcripts are provided throughout, and Pip’s capstone logs offer insights into her thought processes as new evidence and suspects arise. After a tragic event in her life, Sophie heads to her uncle’s home which was previously a school for young girls. Check out Sleepless by Lou Morgan, also from the Red Eye series - the nightmare begins when you're awake. I originally picked it up because the whole doll aspect reminded me of PLL, and it does have some creepy PLL vibes, although thankfully the dolls are where the similarities end!

Sophie stubbornly refuses, and tells them she needs the space right now, so spending time at her uncle's on the Isle of Skye is perfect. I loved the setting, Scotland is a great setting for horror books, the dark and gloomy landscape works really well for a creepy and suspenseful atmosphere and I thought the isle of Skye was an especially great choice, the wild winds, the craggy cliffs, the old schoolhouse, all of it made for a very creepy setting, perfect for this book. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Jackson’s debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. Although dubious about this book at the beginning – mainly due to the plot device of using a Ouija-board app ( yes, app) to invoke the ghost that the whole plot hinges on – I ended up actually rather enjoying this creepy tale.
