I remember my mum (a primary school teacher) carrying a very battered copy of this in her bag to and from school. We agree that ‘The Trial of Derek Drew’ will go down particularly well – I am looking forward to reading the children’s own poems for their trial transcripts! The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Allan Ahlberg’s collection of poems and songs paint a funny and accurate portrait of primary school life, with highly appealing and atmospheric illustrations by Fritz Wegner. He has won numerous awards for his books including, the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986, The Children's Book Award in 1987, the Blue Peter Book Award 2001, and The Children's Book Award: Books for Young Children award 2002.

Janet sadly died in 1994, but Allan has gone on to work with other illustrators and is still producing lots of new books.Janet Ahlberg won two Kate Greenaway Medals for illustrating their books and the 1978 winner Each Peach Pear Plum was named one of the top ten winning works for the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005).

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Packed with rhythmic poetry and playful songs, this timeless collection has delighted children for generations.Whether it is poems about something living in Harrison’s desk, the school boy’s love of kicking a ball, the dread of parents’ evening or the timeless questions “why must we go to school? I remember the boys in my class turning the poem ‘Heard it in the Playground’ into a rap in the style of Vanilla Ice! Now that my mum has spotted it on my bookshelf she has dug out her copy, with refreshed enthusiasm, to use in her all boys Year 6 class.
