About this deal

Interestingly, also, there's no indication of when this story takes place - after one or both of the World Wars (carrier pigeons on the battlefields are mentioned), and there are trains and steamships, and a couple of images of kettles being heated on stoves - so it could take place anytime between (my own personal guess) 1918 and now. And the two together unveil textures of friendship, loneliness, belonging, and the trials and triumphs that shape a life. Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling.

There's much here to resonate with current world events and it's one of the most visually stunning books of the year. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). Evans (mostly due to their shared interest in racing pigeons, although I must admit that I would have much preferred a different type of shared hobby being depicted in King of the Sky as I am on an emotional level rather majorly against breeding and racing pigeons for sport and leisure, just like I am also against falconry and hawking), personally I have found King of the Sky both rather dreary and gloomy and equally not really informative enough with regard to in particular the young boy's immigration status. The story is about a boy who moves from Rome to Wales and befriends an old man who worked in the mines and now trains pigeons to race as homing pigeons. This lovely story will resonate with any child who has felt out of place, whether a transfer student in a new school or an immigrant in a new country.

This is a slow, dream-like, tender story of what it means to make a new home whilst always honouring the one left behind. Evans asserts with unfaltering confidence that the white-headed bird is destined for victory — if only they can find the right race for him.Kirkus * "It is a book filled with foggy skies and dominated by struggle, and yet it spells out the miracle of the homing pigeon's instinct and its metaphorical force. I’m trying to sort of match them up, as opposed to outweigh one another,” explains Carlin in an interview. I have read lots of blog posts about Eagle’s practices and thought that I would stress the things we should learn from it. Starting a new life in a new country, a young boy feels lost and alone – until he meets an old man who keeps racing pigeons. He also tells the boy how clever the pigeons are and that they find their way home again on their own.
