About this deal

Night abilities happen at the end of every turn where that character still resides on your ship, which is a fancy way of saying “the table in front of you. I am going to be completely honest; I was expecting this solo experience to be one similar to Pendulum. So even though everyone will add in the same new 6 characters to their hand, each player’s options will still be unique to them for the next voyage.

These numbers were apparently balanced, but in practice it made breaking ties anticlimactic and felt very arbitrary with no way to influence it. You and the Automa can’t impact it either, it’s just there to remove loot (and make it less likely for you to get what you want). However Pilferer doesn’t gain coins, use abilities or gain loot tokens, it simply removes a loot from the day’s findings. Libertalia — I see the Automa book shows 39 Solo cards… I see there’s 1-40 printed on the cards just like all other cards. I say joint first, I won on the tiebreak but you have to give some false hope to new players, right? But the game puts a lot of potential thought behind the very simple decisions that it asks you to make.

Players have score dials to track their booty and there are also coin tokens with a fun little plastic treasure chest to keep them in. The two-player game now adds a mid-ranked character who’s always on the Island for players to compete with. The reputation track has replaced the tiebreaker mechanism and adds an interesting bonus as the rounds go on. Then starting with the rightmost character, each player with a character on the island gains a Loot token from that day’s space. This is a key element of the game since breaking ties in your favor can be the difference between a chest of gold and a cursed relic. It’s also important to note that after the first journey, players will be left with cards in their hand that will then probably differ from everyone else’s. As for the Pilferer, his role in the Dusk phase is simply to snag a loot token based on his rank amongst the cards on the island row.

It’s double-sided, printed with player aids and everything is laid out in a neat and effective manner to help facilitate the gameplay.Starting at the top and working your way down, you will compare each icon row with the board state until you find the row that matches the loot tokens of the current day. I did enjoy the two-player game as included, but the game is definitely a better experience at the other player counts (including solo).
