About this deal

I allowed the orange montbrecia and carmine escalonia that do so well on the coast, but also a richly scented old white rugosa rose, rosemary, and blue ceanothus. Have never come across anyone who actually found one under the house – on second thoughts apart perhaps from San Clemente in Rome!

I do dream of finding extra rooms in the various houses I lived in – have read that it’s not uncommon, but no idea what it means. But in spring and summer, the house was a fine – warm – place to live and for the first time, after living in London, Bristol and Brighton, I fulfilled a life-long dream: living in the country.

My favorite moment is Margery's description of how she ignored Walter's beloved (and garish) dahlias after his death. This rear garden, the main garden to the cottage, was some way away: across a smaller garden behind the house, then hang a right, open the pale blue gate and pass down a narrow passage. A good gardening book with plenty of handy tips, plant suggestions (some albeit a bit dated) and admissions of mistakes to let you avoid the same pitfalls!I whacked at the hole until we could squeeze through and venture down the steps into a large brick-floored cellar – with, sure enough, a bricked-up window. It was difficult to master but when we understood its foibles and demanding nature, it became central to our cold, wet and muddy life. It’s one of a (not very) regular series of posts about gardens and houses we’ve owned over the years. getting lost) On a chilly-sunny March morning, we pulled into the small carpark at Overton Hill and the start of The Ridgeway.

All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. From the secret to cultivating the smoothest lawn to the art of lifting and replanting tulip bulbs to the landscaping possibilities of evergreens, the diverse elements of successful gardening—and delightful writing—are bound together by Mr. Topics covered are colourful and diverse, ranging from the most suitable hyssop for the terraced garden through composting, hedges, making paths to the best time to lift and replant tulip bulbs. No treasure chest, no skeleton chained to a wall, no ghostly dancing lights… but hey, an extra room is always going to be a good enough find, even if the ceiling wasn’t high enough to stand upright. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. In this beautiful and timeless work, she recounts the trails and tribulations, successes and failures, of her venture with ease and humour.

Good-humoured, unpretentious and a bit eccentric, it's more like having a well-read friend than a subscription to a literary review. Now with a space of her own, Margery threw herself wholeheartedly into the making of a cottage garden, making up in enthusiasm and energy what she lacked in knowledge. Fresh starts, hidden rooms, difficulties that turn into assets, wicked landlords, fairy godmothers who compost. And you’d think that an unknown room, an unknown extra floor, might be the sort of thing they’d point out.I also noticed how overbearing her husband was, and how she enjoyed doing things her own way later on when she gardened by herself. Her good sense, practical knowledge and imaginative ideas will encourage and inspire gardeners everywhere. Well, it wasn't much help as a source of practical inspiration, to be honest, but I enjoyed basking in the warmth of her love for all things green, anyway, and that was a kind of inspiration to take more care of the poor neglected patch of muck.
