About this deal

Professor Moutte was about to announce the recipient of both a fellowship, and his position as Director - which includes the coveted apartment in a 17th century mansion. Further reading about Galle's art was necessary for me to appreciate the plot threads and well worth it. At least the TV adaptation had the sense to move the action from a theology department to medieval history and so saved itself from some of the pitfalls of this dreadfully badly written and incompletely edited tome. Lots of background that really does not help solve the case at all, but makes for nice reading and makes the people more human. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. With a focus on people rather than buildings, history is unravelled through anecdotes with lots of suggestions of what to see when you visit. The differences in the Catholic Church in France were also explored (or exploded) as part of the plot.

Explanations of relationships are clear and kept short (no rehashing of everything one might have learned in the first novel) and are just enough to make new readers comfortable. A promising debut for Longworth, who shows there’s more to France than Paris and more to mystery than Maigret.

Another tedious repetition was the author showing off her knowledge of Aix, providing detailed steet-by-street, turn-by-turn routes various people walk through the city (sometimes including non-existent street names for no apparent reason). A promising debut for Longworth, who shows there's more to France than Paris and more to mystery than Maigret.

The author obviously knows France but she seems incapable of putting that knowledge to use, to make the characters sound French, apart from a guided tour of the streets of Aix-en-Provence. What really makes Longworth’s writing special is her deep knowledge of French history, landscape, cuisine, and even contemporary cafes and restaurants. Enchanted by the deep blue of the Mediterranean, the olive trees, poppies, irises and that dazzling light, artists found their creativity flourished under the hot sun.

Several characters describe her as beautiful, and a great deal of energy is spent making sure we know she's good looking. Priests and nuns with academic credentials, while just as qualified, are significantly cheaper to employ than their lay counterparts , and are more able to provide support and advice for students planning to emulate them.
