About this deal

Regardless, nothing can prepare you for the poems you haven't read yet, and there are quite a few of them. She is an education advocate and keynote speaker for education organizations like NAIS, ECIS, AISA, and IBO, among others. She was a featured poet on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry Jam" in 2006, and that year she was also the youngest poet to compete in the National Poetry Slam. After a long awaited compilation of 10 years, Sarah Kay finally publishes her collection of poems which can only be described as brutally raw, naked, and hopeful.

Even though Sarah Kay has established quite the fan base on Goodreads and on the web, I just could not connect with these poems on a deeper level - perhaps because poetry has never been my genre of choice. On the other hand I figured that the accessibility of the poems would make for far more enjoyable reading than most poetry books. She shows us at all times that she is willing to learn from experiences and to take life lessons away from it. Most of us have had the experience of being forced to read poetry in school, laboring to find the "hidden meaning" that may or may not have been placed there intentionally. Only so many into space, before you forget that words are sometimes used for things other than filling emptiness. One minute you are in India tasting the sweetness of mangoes, the next you are in Hiroshima staring at the metaphorical rubble.

and within less than 20 minutes I was completely captivated, awed and inspired, and Sarah Kay had herself a new lifelong fan. I'm not actually much of a spoken word poetry fan, try as I might have over the years to become one. A number of the poems in the book can be found presented on YouTube, though many are being introduced to the world for the first time here on paper. A dear friend brought Sarah Kay to my attention a few months ago in an attempt to explain to me the wonders of spoken-word poetry.Summary: Following the success of her breakout poem, "B," Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. Poetry is a very subjective thing, and for me to appreciate it I have to connect with what it's saying.
