About this deal

Babushka cleans her little house all day long to stop herself from noticing how lonely and sad she is. But Babouscka is kindly, if a little confused, and whenever she startles a child, she makes up for it with a rattle or a ball.

We've just completed two spectacular performances of Babushka with nearly 100 children and very little rehearsal time due to 'snow days'! Nicholas, or that of the match girl, or the last one about Babushka, very similar to the Italian Befana, I also mention that of Rodolfo the red-nosed reindeer, because it shows how diversity can become an opportunity of happiness. It tells the story of Baboushka, a Russian woman who hears the news of the birth of Jesus - but at first refuses to listen. Her house was the cleanest and freshest and cosiest in all of the village, but though Babushka was kind and hospitable, and sometimes invited people in for a glass of tea, they would soon feel uncomfortable, for she would fuss with dishcloth and broom the moment they sat down. One snowy night, she is visited by a procession of travelers heading for Bethlehem to honor the birth. Stopping at each child’s house, he slides down the chimney and leaves gifts, refreshing himself with milk and cookies left for him by the children in the house. Day and night, it was all the same to her, and she was so busy that she hardly had time to say good morning to her neighbours in the village, or to watch the sunset, or to hear the song of birds, or to delight in the play of children, or to smell the first roses of summer or the first fall of snow in winter. Like all Christmas tales, the legend of Baboushka will only make people realize the beginnings and the ideas behind countless festivities.

Brief telling of the traditional Russian folk story of Babushka, and its associations with Christmas gift-giving. Baboushka travelled for years but she still did not find that special child, who was in fact, Jesus Christ.Unauthorized use or duplication of these words and pictures without written permission is strictly prohibited. She’s so busy brushing away the spider, the mouse and the fly, that she fails to notice beautiful things going on around her: a new star shining in the sky, an angel hovering in her garden and an exciting message being spread by three mysterious kings. She knew the kings would have found somewhere else to rest by now, and that she could easily catch them up, but she felt so tired and soon she fell asleep. Babushka set off towards Bethlehem, and by evening she had arrived and had been travelling for a long time. The star isn't shining in the bright sunlight and the snow has covered the tracks of the three travelers.

In this version we have the five interlocked dolls, each of which has their own special character; they are Antonia, who represents beauty, Loretta who shows wealth, Paula who is multi-talented, Viola who represents wisdom and finally Mary, whilst she is the smallest she represents love and compassion, something to be prized. One bright winter’s morning, Babushka was scrubbing her doorstep when out came the next door neighbour from her house. The book is a beautiful retelling of a classic russian fairytale and the story is enhanced with colourful illustrations. Every region, area, country has its own favorite Christmas story that elders and children alike love recounting during this time of the year. Each of the beasts was richly saddled and bridled, and each of the men carried a small chest, inlaid with ivory and gold. With beautiful illustrations evoking folk art traditions and sensitive storytelling, Babushka tenderly reminds us that nothing is more important during the holiday season than taking the time to show love for one another.

Based on the traditional Russian story of Baboushka, this hilarious musical takes a fresh perspective on the Nativity. She missed the star as it shone in the sky, and she missed the little line of twinkling lights coming down towards the village at dawn. On her journey she meets people in n eed, and by the time she reaches Bethlehem she has learnt a valuable lesson, as well as filling an empty place in her heart.
