Before I Do: a funny and unexpected love story from the author of THIS TIME NEXT YEAR
About this deal
They crossed paths at a photo booth and ended up with each other's pictures, went on one date, and then through some miscommunication, lost touch and didn't see each other again until Fred appeared at Audrey's wedding as a plus-one six years later.
This was such a fab, thought provoking book that I read in a day - I love the way the author wove humour through the reality of life - to the many possible endings there could have been. Her writing is on pitch and thoughtful, balancing serious ideas, like family trauma and the nature of love and commitment, with a light-hearted touch. Audrey was supposed to be torn between these two guys (for some reason), but she has very few interactions with Fred and spends most of the “present” chapters running from Josh. You may want to shake Audrey while reading, but there's reasons why she feels the way she does, and why she feels so off. I didn’t think either Josh or Fred was good enough for her but eventually saw that one of them was much better for her than the other.
Every now and then, I need a palate cleanser after reading so many psychological thrillers, and this one fit the bill perfectly. It was something that I never thought I'd do, or something that I would hold off on for a few years yet. And now that Fred, the first man who ever made her feel "something" is back before her wedding, she wonders if that is a sign she's about to make a big mistake. As bad omen after bad omen begin to unfold before the wedding, including the sudden reappearance of Fred, all but professing his love, Audrey must decide who it is she’s meant to be with and deal with the obstacles standing in her way.
While some aspects of the book (like the humor) never really took off for me, Cousens utilized the now-and-then timelines with care and precision to leave YOU, the reader, as conflicted as Audrey about which man is TRULY right for her! When Minnie unexpectedly runs into Quinn at a New Year's party on their mutual thirtieth birthday, she sees only more evidence that fortune has continued to favor him. Cousens is a wonderful author whose books I’ll continue to devour happily - this story was just not my perfect match. guy, the man she met six years ago and had one amazing day with but never saw again - Audrey can't help but see it as a sign. She always delivers a true, laugh-out-loud, romcom with a ton of depth, and Audrey may be my favourite heroine. I thought it was gonna be one of those “she was about to marry the wrong person but the right person appeared right before her wedding” but NO it was so much more. What would you do if, at your engagement party, your fiance’s sister brings your first love (and the one that got away) as her date?
