Bombs on Aunt Dainty: A classic and unforgettable children’s book from the author of The Tiger Who Came To Tea
About this deal
This book absolutely fizzes - Anna's is so lively, intelligent, naïve, hungry to learn and eat up life - but it also dips into despair and a sense of the meaninglessness of life, the personal suffering which can overwhelm anyone at times, making the `in love with it all' feel like an unbearable sham.
This one covers the protagonists teen/young adult period so has some elements with relationship themes( in the 40s and 50s) which made my 10yo a bit squirmy but overall she enjoyed very much reading with mum and dad.Anna/Judith is beautifully soulful and beautifully present to the authenticity of embracing all of it. A fantastic insight into what life was like before and during the Second World War from the perspective of young girl Anna (Judith Kerr) and her Jewish family as they flee Berlin just as Hitler rises to power, moving to Switzerland, Paris and finally London.
An omnibus edition of Judith Kerr’s internationally acclaimed trilogy, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, Bombs on Aunt Dainty and A Small Person Far Away, we see the world through Anna’s eyes as she grows up – from her much loved family to Hitler’s holocaust. I learned a lot about the life of a refugee, from the child’s eye viewpoint despite being long past childhood. By the time the bombs began to fall she was a stateless adolescent in London, and after it was all over she became a happily married Englishwoman who thought she had put the past behind her.The chief point about these last, admittedly wretched years……is that it is infinitely better to be alive that dead. Anna's friend explains what Hitler wants to do: "He wants everybody to vote for him in the elections and then he's going to stop the Jews. The book is for children and teenagers and it is perfect for the holocaust remembrance month, we are currently celebrating.
