About this deal

Others include a woman found stabbed in a particularly brutal way, 23 dead squirrels and a campus where several women were attacked. David attempts to reconcile who this baby's true mother might be but is taken aback when he finds the mother dead. The information about prosopagnosia (face blindness) was an interesting development and integral to the story. And don't expect all the answers in this first volume - Barclay is keeping plenty of secrets back for parts two and three. Three of those seventeen novels comprise the epic Promise Falls trilogy: Broken Promise, Far From True, and The Twenty-Three.

Each new book that he has published has consistently fulfilled and exceeded the promise of his previous one, with many of them set in a mythical but true-to-life town in New York named Promise Falls. All these instances hold similarities that cause concern for the head detective Barry Duckworth, who is also investigating the brutal death of a young woman and her stolen baby. The baby was stillborn 10 mos earlier, and Marla has not recovered, and afterwards caught stealing another baby from the hospital.

This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations. His two novels for children – Chase and Escape – star a computer-enhanced dog named Chipper who’s on the run from the evil organization that turned him into a super-pup.It raises the question, just how well do you really know these people; your friends, your family, your acquaintances? However, Marla Pickens has a surprise for David, a baby she claims was passed along to her "by an angel". Next up is Far From True, the second in the series, and a chance to pull some loose ends together and shed a little more light onto life in Promise Falls. Broken promise wasn’t a bad read, quite the opposite, with multiple plot lines it was intricate and well written. A special thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A murder, a missing Nanny, her boyfriend, a fatal shooting at Thackeray College, rapes, strange things in the night at Five Mountains, a deserted amusement park, with three mannequins on a Ferris Wheel, and twenty-three dead squirrels hanging, mixed with a message "YOU'LL BE SORRY". David was sure Marla was incapable of inflicting injury on a person – but the circumstantial evidence was damning. If you like your crime more twisty than a bowl of fusilli pasta, then you will love Linwood Barclay and this tale of a small town newspaper reporter investigating a gruesome murder and a missing baby. Detective Barry Duckworth, for example, is one of the people who you should pay attention to from the first time you read the name.

There are many characters with many quirks, characteristics and I am sure back stories that could lead on to many different spin offs. One thing I really like about this book was that it has connections to Too Close to Home, it's the same town and some characters from that book are in this one as well. There is a greater lean towards mystery, with a multitude of characters harbouring dark secrets and chequered pasts. David finds his cousin Marla, raising a child who is not her own—a baby she claims was a gift from an “angel” left on her porch.

When private investigator Cal Weaver looks into a break-in at the home of a recently deceased man, he uncovers far more than he is prepared for after he finds a hidden room that was used for salacious activities. A true master is back on the scene, and this is another book that can go directly into the suspense lover’s hall of fame. The rest of the story is told from a variety of characters including Detective Duckworth, Agnes, David's father, and a man who has just lost his wife to name a few. When it looks like Marla is under suspicion for the murder of Rosemary Gaynor, David starts asking questions. Marla’s story as to how she came to have the child --- left at her home by a woman dressed in white --- doesn’t quite pass David’s truth detector.

This is a suspense/mystery that will keep you guessing most of the way, but not necessarily about the crime you are thinking.
