About this deal

The idea of the game is to be the first detective to find out where the crime occurred, why the victim killed and what weapon was used to commit the murder and then catch the killer using deduction skills, evidence cards, truth and deception to crack the case.

As you build up for you evidence, it is worth noting that other players may be trying to fool you, or bluff certain things. However (and this is why I detest hidden information and traitor mechanics in games), you quickly realise that when presented the opportunity the average player will consistently lie to you or screw you over, even if it sets back everyone - including them - in the process. Based on the hit podcast of the same name, this seedy, self-branded “strategy game” Case File Truth and Deception (it is certainly not, your first clue that this was developed by people who fundamentally don’t understand the concepts they’re working with right out of the gate) sees players take on the role of detectives attempting to solve a murder mystery, exchanging evidence in shady deals and pulling the wool over their rivals’ eyes, bribing and lying to one another in equal measure to uncover the truth. Loved this Keith Haring toy, it engrossed my 4 year old just as much as it fascinated me - hours of fun, and it looks so good too.Later, I have the evidence they’ve just asked about, but I drew it last round so no one else has seen it; should I hold off revealing that I have it, or will the other players do the same, allowing the active player to draw a card for free and gain an edge anyway?

You must be over 18, a resident of the country offering Afterpay, and meeting additional eligibility criteria to qualify. Some more expansive titles even require multiple ‘practice’ or ‘open-hand’ sessions to parse everything. in point: Case File, a game entirely revolving around bluffing and hidden information, does not tell you if you discard cards face down or face up, and such a blunder is beyond belief.Remember, this is a game of deception and one of the players may plant false evidence to throw you and the other detectives off track.

Game includes 1 casefile game board, 4 case trackers, 4 dry erase markers, 44 cards, 1 deception die, 1 confidential folder and the complete instructions. Also, when people say they match evidence players are looking for and say a number value, they may of course be planning to show you false evidence, or evidence you have seen before. Solve crimes around a fictional small town, piecing together the evidence to discover where it happened, how it happened, and who did it.

But be aware, there is false evidence floating around to throw you off the scent and other players can bluff, lie and deceive so you really do need to be sure of the evidence in front of you. Shuffle each deck separately and then choose one card at random from the first four piles (exclude the false evidence pile). This is a game of deduction, deception and collecting evidence and to keep track of this each players uses their case tracker. Wealthy businessman Casey Parker has been murdered, and it’s the responsibility of you and your team mates to solve the case. When that rulebook is complicated, or long, it can be a bit of a chore to learn the game and teach everyone else. Each player is given their investigation board (where they will tick off items of interest as they narrow down the evidence) and draws five cards.
