The side characters here are all pretty funny, and you can almost see members of your own family in almost every one of them. This particular review is covering the seminal 1989 holiday comedy masterwork, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Back in the 80’s he was on fire with hit after hit, and his overly cheerful portrayal of the madcap Griswold family leader fits him quite well. I’m not quite sure what the logic is in keeping the parents the same, but constantly changing the actors.

The only lump of coal for this disc is the decided lack of any new bonus features with the same old commentary track recycled and wrapped up in old newspaper for this release. Facial features and textures are quite clear as day and present some more finer points in any reasonable distance in the frame. Nevertheless, worse comes to worse, Clark’s Christmas bonus turns out to be the “gift that gives the whole year around” and Cousin Eddie decides to do a little something about it.

Its still got some of the slapstick from European Vacation, but it works well into this story’s tone and isn’t eye-rolling. There may not be any “Holiday Road” this time around to jam to, but that’s about the only thing this one doesn’t have when transferring the spirit and life of the original into it. Just like Santa sliding down the chimney every year, a new release of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation slides onto disc. I mean, what “Vacation” movie would be complete without Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and their dirt poor, redneck family.

While I’ve never found this film to look bad, the new 4K image does show some noticeable improvements. The first two installments in the series showed us that the trips, though well thought out and organized in theory, can have disastrous consequences once Murphy’s Law (anything that can go wrong, will) gets involved. Overall, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a holiday classic and for me a must-watch every year. From DVD to the first HD-DVD and Blu-rays, it had a pretty lackluster run until the 2015 25th Anniversary Disc. Both ambient and discrete effects which includes off camera sounds, are mixed to both the front and rear channels.

My Dad isn’t one for movies (he goes to them, has ones he wants to see/likes, but really doesn’t care all too much past that overall), but there are 2 he loves and watches over and over in his life and its this one and the Harrison Ford version of The Fugitive. It’s now the 33rd anniversary of the film’s release, and despite not being a particular milestone, Warner Bros. John Hughes is the bona fide master of the holiday comedy, and his 1989 script for Christmas Vacatio n seems to hit very close to home for every individual attempting to provide the perfect family Christmas; at its heart, the film is a sweet ode to the family man (or woman) who tries his damnedest and yet inevitably mucks things up by going overboard and getting too elaborate.
