With 78 hand-painted cards, each brimming with colors and emotions, this deck comes alive in the hands of those who seek to explore the realms of the unconscious mind. The Night card has an unusual quality in that it encourages the Seeker to make the most of the night hours. However, the traditional Wands suit in this deck is named Torches, and with the imagery of torches, I am guessing that suit is still Fire. These beautiful, hand-painted cards are so vibrant, colourful and so joyous to read, they really are a pleasure to work with. The colors are incredibly vibrant, and each of the minor arcana suits have distinct color themes, which tie them together in a way that feels very coherent. I feel they are a good size and don't feel clunky to shuffle at all, but then again I have bigger hands than most so YMMV. Tillie Walden’s art reminds one of early twenty-first-century anime masterpieces such as Spirited Away (2001) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), except that there is a fleshy, tactile quality that I hadn’t expected.

What I love the most about Walden’s illustration work in this deck is how unrestrained and even unruly the lines and composition feel, and yet if you know what you’re looking at, the use of color, the composition and the way Walden knows exactly how to guide your eyes across the narrative tells you there’s remarkable control and discipline here.
