Pure And Simple
About this deal
Bridge over troubled water, a cover, but you only have to listen to this once to love it, and the third song - i can't stop thinking about it - a faster one. They initially announced five dates which quickly sold out, causing the band to schedule thirty more dates. In November 2001, just nine months after the release of their debut album, Hear'Say released Everybody.
Lovin' Is Easy", the group's only single to be released with Shentall, failed to make a commercial impact. This was the debut single for the band put together in the first ITV Popstars series on British TV, which they won after over 2,000 hopefuls had been auditioned. Take Me Home Country Roads" is set in West Virginia, but John Denver had never been there when he recorded the song. The song also topped the New Zealand Singles Chart for five weeks and reached number three in Ireland.
This single had the third fastest selling opening week (550,000 copies sold) in UK chart history and the biggest ever by a debut act and a non-charity record. Pure and Simple" debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart after selling 550,000 copies in its first week, which, at the time, made it the fastest-selling debut single of all time in the United Kingdom. Their record was beaten a year later by Will Young, the first UK Pop Idol, with his debut single "Anything Is Possible/Evergreen," which sold over 1 million in its first week. The chorus has a fantastic hookline, and the melody is exactly as it says, pure and simple, which is why this song works. During the tour, the group's vehicle was threatened by an apparently armed man at a motorway service area on the M1 motorway in Leicestershire. The five unsuccessful finalists went on to form the group Liberty (later renamed Liberty X after a legal dispute). After the band's break-up, all members went on to achieve individual success elsewhere in the entertainment industry.
With the release of their debut album Popstars, Hear'Say became the first act in UK chart history to simultaneously top the UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart with their debut releases. In March 2001, Hear'Say released their first single, " Pure and Simple", a cover of a little-known album track by Girl Thing. The song was co-written by Pete Kirtley, Tim Hawes and Betty Boo (under her real name of Alison Clarkson); however, nearly 14 years after the song was released, Linzi Martin of the band Girl Thing made the assertion that she was responsible for the majority of the song's composition, having written the verses after Pete Kirtley (her then boyfriend) had brought the chorus of the track to her as a gift. They were created through the ITV reality TV show Popstars in February 2001, the first UK series of the international Popstars franchise. The group, who were signed to Polydor Records, originally consisted of Danny Foster, Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan. Kym's voice is by far the strongest and she stands out as the most talented member of this new band, which explains why she takes most of the lead lines. The audition process was televised in segments of This Morning, an ITV daily morning show, mirroring the procedure during which the original members of Hear'Say were chosen.
