The use of heavily peated malt, along with traditional floor malting techniques, infuses the spirit with the unmistakable aroma of smoldering peat fires. I've only been through about 4 dozen single malts over 20 years but this is my favourite overall (so far). On the nose there are clouds of smoke with an iodine infused sea spray topped with a sprig of seaweed. They take several casks of normal ex Bourbon matured Laphroaig, that has been maturing for between 5 and 11 years, and vat them together before pouring them into Quarter casks (125 litres). Laphroaig 10 year old is the original Laphroaig, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it more than 75 years ago. Laphroaig is a Scotch Whisky distillery on the western Scottish island of Islay and one of the best-known of all the single malts. Others can be deceiving - I have a bottle of Ledaig, the Tobermory peated expression, which smells like creme brulee and mashed potato on the nose - not a hint of peat until it hits the tongue. It's time in the cask has made it a nice smooth dram; not quite as smooth as the likes of Ardbeg 10, but still good.The oiliest, smokiest and briniest of the Islay malts, Laphroaig is definitely a love it or hate it dram. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love. The palate shows peat smoke from the first sip plus an undercurrent of honey, finishing with black pepper heat. This unique expression begins with the same time-honoured process that goes into our regular 10 Year Old Laphroaig®. It's big, bold, smoky, with a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness, which makes Laphroaig an acquired taste for some, an essential taste for many – and for those who embrace it, a friend for life.
