Alongside Rinpoche’s teachings, Kathleen McDonald presents meditations that lead to peace, compassion, and joy for ourselves and others. The Life and Liberation of Padmasambhava, a terma concealed by the Great Guru and recovered in the fourteenth century by Orgyen Lingpa, is a treasury of esoteric teachings related in highly symbolic poetic form. These works expanded the profile and activities of Padmasambhava, now seen as taming all the Tibetan spirits and gods, and concealing various secret texts ( terma) for future tertöns. They are servants to others' reactions, positive or negative, and are preoccupied with others' opinions; they do not consider the Dharma as anything but a means to food and wealth.

All around were inspired by faith, and thus it was that the Guru and his consort caused the kingdom to embrace the Dharma, establishing its people in the state that is beyond falling back into saṃsāra. Moreover, he appeared in the country of Shangshung as the miraculously-born child Tavi Hricha, who gave the instructions on the hearing lineage of Atiyoga and led many worthy disciples to the attainment of the rainbow body. In view of the absolute purity which equals the Plane of Essence itself, he was invested in the tenth stage with the power of the Dharma.

In accordance with Śāntarakṣita’s prediction, the King sent five messengers to India, to invite the great master Padmasambhava to come.

Through his great acts of making offerings to the Three Jewels and giving alms to the poor and needy, the king had exhausted his treasury, and had set out on a voyage upon the great lake to find a wish-fulfilling jewel. In the oceans that surround the western land of Uḍḍiyāna to the north, south, and east, there lies an island close to the land of the rākṣasas, found to Uḍḍiyāna’s southwest. The Son of the Gods, Yeshe Togi Gyaltsen, Staff of the Sign of Knowledge, after the rain of the four rivers of power, will be like a bull among the gods.

As a consequence of breaking the law against killing children, Padmasambhava was promptly banished to the charnel grounds. This fourth and final Science and Philosophy in the Indian Buddhist Classics volume provides, through extensive passages, a window into the works of the great thinkers from the flowering of philosophy in classical India. Another story tells how the King of Turkestan had sent invading armies to the kingdom of Kaccha, where Buddhist groups were thriving. Each of the pores in his body held a billion realms and in each realm there were a billion world systems.

This great master was not an ordinary person on the path, nor merely a noble being on one of the bodhisattva levels. At present the Guru dwells on the ‘vidyādhara level of spontaneous presence’, the path of consummation, as the Vajradhara regent, unshakable for as long as saṃsāra remains. Lives and Liberation recounts her struggles and triumphs as a Buddhist adept throughout her many lives and is an authentic deliverance story of a female Buddhist master. He is a tireless teacher of methods that work for us when all is well, and also when life’s troubles, big and small, seem unmanageable. With the guidance he gives us, we can progress in our practice of the perfections until we, like the bodhisattvas, learn to cherish others above ourselves.

And so, with the dual purpose of protecting Samyé and preventing future invasions of Tibet by hostile neighbouring tribes, the Guru sent prince Murub Tsenpo with an army to the Uyghur hermitage (bha ta hor gyi sgom grwa) located in the Gansu corridor. As he carefully describes each perfection, he not only reveals the depth of its meaning and how it intertwines with each other perfection, but he also explains how to practice it fully in our everyday lives—offering concrete ways for us to be more generous, more patient, more wise. Rich in names of persons, contributions, practices, and locations, this text is a valuable resource not only for the history of Buddhism in Tibet, but also for conveying the spiritual environment created by the blessings and activities of the Great Guru and his disciples.
