Honestly, the author just doesn't seem particularly interested in the whole premise, except as a way to emphasize that the heroine's people-pleasing problems are really bad—I mean, they're so bad that she even. I love how much he cared about Elsie and she became a better version of herself just by being with him. Not to mention I couldn't feel any chemistry between Jack and Elsie, and it all made for a rather lackluster read by the end.
