About this deal

I choose to read this book because Into the Spider-Verse 2 is coming out soon and I wanted to get into the mood to seeing the film. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. Their banter and intimacy toes the bromance line as most comic relationships are apt to do, but moreover it’s always great normalizing boys saying “I love you” to their friends, genuinely caring for one another’s mental health, etc.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! For the past 40 years or so in comic book history, if the main artist needs someone to help fill in, the editors will say that such and such artists assisted on pages 5-9 or something like that. Now, almost instantly, this book introduces the Stranger as one of the most powerful characters Miles could ever face, and even at one point states itself that Miles could never defeat him. I also found the whole thing very light weight, and he literally punches the bad guy once and it is over. The help Miles receives from his best friend Ghanke and his family gives him strength and the ability to problem solve situations. The Stranger plans to freeze people in a state of unexplained hibernation and then turn half the population against the other half. I’m giving it 2 bonus stars for the boys and the open discourse about mental health, since both are reasons for me to encourage my students to pick it up. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example.

Strengths: Miles is a fun character who is a bit ambivalent about being a superhero, which seems on target for young people today. His original comic story The Journey , about the true accounts of people migrating from Latin America to the US, was a 2019 Eisner Award nominee.

They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! The plot is fast-paced and builds towards the inevitable final confrontation between our hero and The Stranger. After Miles learns of his destiny to somehow defeat the Stranger against impossible odds, he… doesn’t really do much until being knocked out by Vex, Trinity’s former best friend, who works for the Stranger.

but the graphic novel suffers from the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it emotional ways in which these (temporary) losses affect Miles. After he finishes each one I get him another and he gets super excited about it while waiting for the next book! When half the world freezes, Miles must learn to depend on others to fix it… especially when someone he loves dearly is in trouble! Enjoyed this second installment in the series but still confused about how the villain was defeated. Shock Waves, the predecessor of this book, had a solid plot and I really enjoyed the art and characters.

At its heart, the story lifts up the real-world consequences of a series of natural disasters to the proud people of Puerto Rico, challenging us all to recognize our shared responsibility. He sees the human race as an abject failure and intends to wipe out one half of the global population by hypnotising the other half into murderousness. It's a good way to make comics accessible to kids who might otherwise be intimated by the sheer volume of Marvel comics there are out there. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Opposite of Always , his debut novel, was an Indies Introduce selection, a School Library Journal Best Book, has been translated in 17 languages, and is being developed for film with Paramount Players. Miles has to team up with some unlikely help to have any hope of defeating a supervillain who is self-proclaimed to be the smartest and wisest in the multiverse.
