Maybe my feelings were a bit shady because of another recently read that tells another story about Hook with more intensity and mystery.Valentino’s original, behind-the-scenes tale across the entire Villains series largely culminates in this story. Not only do Valentino’s stories give readers the opportunity to explore villains they know and love, readers are also introduced to new characters that operate behind the scenes of classic Disney plots, giving tales-as-old-as-time a bewitching new twist.

I did like how his presence and dedication to his captain was explained - being a father figure to James. This book series is based around fiction, fairy tales, and magic, so having an actual historic figure in the story was confusing and just off to me. In terms of characters, I think the reason I struggled to connect with James was that his actions felt selfish to me all along. But just as she is on the cusp of accepting a life of misery, events take a stunning turn when a handsome stranger - the poet and notorious rake Lord Byron - arrives at her house, stricken by what seems to be a curse, and with a cryptic message for Lucy.

James, the heir to a duchy, fell out of his pram and was whisked away to Never Land where he played with the Lost Boys and Peter Pan before his parents managed to find him and bring him home. And even once James gets to Never Land (which I was looking forward to), I found the whole plot there to be so contrived and ridiculous. But Barnum has never given up a money-making scheme in his life, and he's determined to hold on to his mermaid.
