Single malt scotch is defined as whisky that is made in Scotland at one distillery from a mash bill of 100 percent malted barley. It must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak barrels. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. Aberlour malt whisky is a medium-weight single malt, which gains in in toffee-like sweetness as it matures more, making ageing a key part of the production process. It has sufficient depth to benefit from the sherry cask maturation that gives it the signature Scotch malt whisky flavour we know and love so well. Fermented for 48 hours and boasting a warming balance of sweet and fruity flavours, this whisky is a wonderful example of Scotch at its finest and is one of the best value Speyside malts on the market. On the palate too, it is very creamy, almost syrupy. Dried fruit and nuts, flambéed banana again, Grand Marnier, dried figs and dades, honey, caramelized apple. Hints of citrus. And suddenly the spices emerge: cinnamon, ginger, pepper, saffron, vanilla. Very accessible and sweet.

At Aberlour, our whisky is born out of craft, passion and knowledge that’s been handed down through generations. I got this bottle as a gift from a colleague that came in late the day after a personnel party at which she let her hair down a bit too heavily. It was her way of apologizing and I gladly accepted. In all seriousness, this is double cask matured, what means that the whisky matured for 16 years on bourbon- and sherry casks. The label says traditional oak and sherry oak. After maturation they were brought together in the marrying tun before being bottled at drinking strength. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.It was a long and fractious courtship, but that feisty lass Aberlour A’bunadh and I eventually found love. Our skirmishes were Shakespearian in magnitude; she was Kate to my Petruchio, only this time the shrew tamed me. Think you a little din can daunt mine ears? Or tastebuds, as the case may be? Years ago I wrote about Aberlour’s beloved cask strength A’bunadh bottling, but I have long overlooked some charming offerings from this Speyside-based distillery. (Never mind the “Highland” on the label.) Aberlour’s standard age-statemented, more typical proof whiskies rely on some uncommon barrel aging techniques to create some unusual and easy-drinking single malts. Thoughts follow on the 12, 16, and 18 year old expressions. The Finish: Sweet, dusty and spicy in just the right balance. The finish isn’t all that long, but it feels just about right. 16 years worth of oak notes linger on a bit. I got this bottle for Christmas from my wife and it has since established itself as my favourite Speyside malt, and one of my favourite Scotches overall. The best overall single malt scotch, in a very competitive field, is Aberlour 16. This whisky combines the best flavors of bourbon and sherry cask maturation and provides the best complexity of flavor and palate for its price range.

Taste: Smooth, creamy nuttiness, floral notes are evident, spicy in the way of nutmeg and cinnamon. Sweet red plums and a slight bitter oak exist to round of the initial taste. Complexity is nice. The most complex whisky I've acquired. The Palate: After that rich, inviting nose, the entry was a little empty, which was surprising and a little disappointing. It was sweet and smooth but in a way, kind of like simple syrup, I was expecting more complexity and depth. Things become more interesting with candied orange notes, oaked sherry and a pleasant spiciness, with a little cinnamon towards the end.

Long and Rich With Dry Warming Spice

Many scotch enthusiasts may discover that they're well into their journey of appreciation before they ever actually learn what the phrase "single malt" even means. To be considered a single malt scotch, the whisky must be distilled from a mash bill of 100 percent malted barley at one distillery and aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks. Distillers are then allowed to get as creative as they’d like, from experimenting with the number of distillations to using a variety of cask finishes.
