Not every viewer will be willing or able to sit through two and a half hours of epic, bloody, graphically violent war reenactments. But those who do make it through this third film version (and the first in German) of the classic German novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, will be rewarded with a subtly humane tale of friendship, endurance, and the value of human life. The violence serves the story and its message. Director Edward Berger and team have done a jaw-dropping job of choreographing battlefield scenes, shooting them often at eye level and embedded in the trenches, giving the viewer the impression of being in the mix. A disquieting score relies heavily on single, melancholic beats that come and go with the action. Newcomer Kammerer is excellent as the wide-eyed recruit who barely withstands each passing day of tragedy. Set during World War I, it follows the life of an idealistic young German soldier named Paul Bäumer. After enlisting in the German Army with his friends, Bäumer finds himself exposed to the realities of war, shattering his early hopes of becoming a hero as he does his best to survive. The film adds a parallel storyline not found in the book, which follows the armistice negotiations to end the war. Jamelle Bouie (December 17, 2022). This version of All Quiet on the Western Front is a less impressionist view of warthan Come and See, though –anda leaner, meaner and more savage beast than Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning 1930 take on Remarque’s source novel. The only grumble is the adaptation cuts a bit too deeply into the bones of the book. There are some moving scenes as Paul finds solace in the camaraderie of his mates – incongruously, the best of them plays out on the latrine – but All Quiet on the Western Front would have been an even better movie for letting us know these mud-caked men a little better.
