Some comments mention that the acting is somewhat wooden. I tend to disagree. (Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course). Okay, so Patsy Kensit may not be the next Vanessa Redgrave, however, I think she offers what the part calls for. Her "wooden" nature fits the character. I see Eugenia as having a definite mental imbalance, thus her often subdued acting seems appropriate. Kristin Scott Thomas is excellent as the clever and mysterious Matty. As for the rest of the cast, I believe that they all did a fine job portraying these somewhat difficult characters. I think whether or not this film (or the novella for that matter) touches you, depends on whether you identify with the idea of the "plain jane" who has to inevitably watch the man she desires reject her and choose the prettiest girl. Since these actions result in tragedy and disaster, and the "plain jane" ends up triumphing and getting her man in the end, "Angels and Insects" is following basic romantic novel tradition, with a few highly original and unusual quirks along the way.

To be told that things are not what they seem is to encourage us always to be on the lookout for new interpretations. Byatt includes a story, written by Matty Crompton, alongside scientific descriptions written by William himself. Each of these appears only tangentially related to the story, at least at first. But we know that something is there, and if we have the energy for it, certainly the story has a wondrous richness to it that will reward further thought and analysis. The Heart of the Story What weakness there is in the novel is in the somewhat cursory manner many of the human relationships are explored.

The first novella tells the story of a man's obsession for the woman he loves, holding her in the highest regard, only to find out that she is the worst of liars (having engaged in incest) and he has to leave, without telling anyone. "For who wouldn't be hurt by such knowledge." These novellas offer two visions of humanity. Morpho Eugenia regards people as another evolutionary form differing little from the social insects. The Conjugal Angel accepts the soul’s immortality and religious mysticism. The former revolves around doubt and infidelity; the latter, apart from a minor episode involving an ill-mannered clergyman, tells of love and reunion. Both are entertaining. If the darker vision appears the truer, perhaps Byatt is challenging the reader to ponder why.

BYATT, Dame Antonia (Susan), (Dame Antonia Duffy), DBE 1999 (CBE 1990); FRSL 1983; Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France), 2003 , writer; born 24 Aug. 1936; A few reviewers have commented on the loud and gaudy costumes of the film. Although the designers are taking a few liberties, and clearly want us to associate the costumes with various insects, like bees, in fact they are not as bizarre as first impression would indicate. We often think that 19th century costumes were very grim and dark, but this is largely because we only see them in B&W photos of the period, or the few faded examples that have survived. In fact, the bright fabric dyes of the period WERE very loud and gaudy, and the taste of the time was for big prints, contrasting colors and lots of elaborate fringes, ruffles, etc. (I studied fashion history in design school, and I can vouch for this!) It IS startling, because we have been largely misled by "tasteful" costume dramas, but I found the picture of the 19th century represented here to be fresh and authentic.Taken together, they show the reach and the promise of the Byattian project of resuming the incomplete work of the past." - Michael Levenson, The New Republic In effetti potrei limitare il mio punto di vista s questo romanzo a queste due singole righe, ma vorrei andare un pochino più a fondo ... But it is Eugenia (Patsy Kensit) who is the focus of the film. A poor naturalist (Mark Rylance) is madly in love with her, but her racist brother (Douglas Henshall) warns him that he is not of the right class and should be real. William (Rylance) flits ever so cautiously towards Eugenia's web and is ensnared. I am sure there is something beneath the surface here; maybe the same something that caused Eugenia's former fiancée to kill himself.
