What is the best way to crush the candy canes? You can also get a cute candy cane horseshoe set like this one from Oriental Trading and use candy canes instead of rope. The smaller puddle of the sugar mixture needs to be coloured with red gel colouring. You only need a tiny amount, which still gives you strong red colour. The large puddle of the sugar mixture is not being coloured, but if you have white gel colour, you can use that. Here are the tools and equipment I use to make my traditional sweets recipes. To make this candy cane recipe, you’ll need:

Bobbing for Candy Canes Blogghetti/Bobbing for candy canes via blogghetti.com On the plus side, they’re so easy to make that I can whip up another batch in no time at all in the next week or so – I mainly want them for snowman soup in for Christmas Eve so there’s plenty of time to make some more! I am so pleased with the way my candy cane spoons turned out! It’s so rare that something I make actually turns out looking the way I pictured it in my head but these cute little spoons not only did that, they actually looked even better than I imagined! Yes, it is a common tradition to hang candy canes on Christmas trees. This practice originated in the mid-1800s when sweets and baked goods were commonly hung from festive trees. Candy canes became a popular addition, adding a decorative and edible element to the tree. 7. What flavor is a regular candy cane? You don't have to, but I do recommend doing this to achieve the same results as me. I like a very slight bump or dome on my cupcakes, and for them to rise all the way to the top of the cupcake cases. I've tested this recipe multiple times and found that beating the butter and sugar together for 5 minutes achieves what I consider to be the perfect rise! Do you need an electric mixer to make this recipe? You could also decorate the cupcakes with mini candy canes, fondant or royal icing candy cane decorations, or any mint chocolate sweets. Candy canes have become strongly associated with Christmastime due to their origins in Germany. They were initially handed out during plays reenacting the Nativity and became a popular treat during the holiday season in Europe. 5. Why do people eat candy cane for Christmas? After few minutes the sugar starts to dissolve, but if you test it with a wooden spoon, you can still see sugar crystals that are not fully dissolved. Keep it on very low heat and wait a little longer until all is dissolved.

Shuffleboard, but with candy canes. On a table, tape three sections. Each one is a different scoring section. Then, give participants a marshmallow and candy cane. Participants use the candy cane to push the marshmallow into a scoring section. The person with the highest score wins. 18. Candy Cane Fencing Next time I make these I think I’m going to try putting the candy canes into my blender. Wouldn’t it be nice if it could do all the work for us? Let’s make candy cane spoons. Divide your group into teams of four or five kids. Give each team white and red streamers. Choose one person on each team to be the “Candy Cane” while the others are the “Wrappers.” The Candy Cane person must stand still while the Wrappers use their red and white crepe paper to wrap them up in stripes like a candy cane. The first team to finish wins! 10. Candy Cane Derby Play Party Plan/Candy cane derby via playpartyplan.com Repeat the same with the red mixture, only this time don’t pull for so long, otherwise the red becomes too opaque and gets little too light in colour.I was so pleased with them when they were cool enough to be taken out of the silicone mould – they looked brilliant and as I’d made four of them, I was planning to use them when we had our snowman soup a bit closer to Christmas. Unfortunately, as I was carrying them over to the table to photograph them, I tripped and two of them snapped in half. ;-( I don’t think it’s that they’re particularly flimsy to be honest as I did stumbled and they got caught between the cup I was also holding and my chest – they had no chance really, did they? Divide kids into teams and give them clues for a candy cane scavenger hunt. See how many they can find in the time you give them. Use candy canes and pipe cleaners to wrap stripes for each number. For younger children, work up to the number that you’ve taught. For older kids, have them see how many stripes they can get onto one candy cane. 7. Candy Cane Estimation Personally Andrea/Jar of candy canes via personallyandrea.com Depending on the type of your peppermint flavour you might need to add 1-2 teaspoons of the extract. I’ve added 2 teaspoons and the flavour was fairly minty, but not overpowering. I always use unsalted butter and baking spread for baking. This is because if you want to add salt to your recipe, you then have complete control of the salt level. Lots of people add salt to enhance the flavour of baked goods, so when you do this you want to know exactly how much you're adding. I personally prefer not to add salt to cakes and cupcakes. However, using a salted butter or baking spread will not affect the bake negatively and won't make it taste salty. Do you have to beat the butter and sugar together for the full 5 minutes?

Make sure all your ingredients (particularly the butter and eggs) are at room temperature before you start baking. Start by mixing the baking spread and caster sugar together in a mixing bowl for 5 minutes using an electric mixer. Or mix in the bowl of your stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Then add the eggs, peppermint extract and milk, and mix until fully incorporated. Gently fold in, or whisk by hand, the self raising flour, cocoa powder and baking powder. A regular candy cane is traditionally white with red stripes and flavored with peppermint. However, candy canes are now available in a variety of other flavors and colors to suit different preferences. 8. Why do we give peppermint to Christmas? For teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (tbsp) measurements, please use measuring spoons* and not the type of spoons you eat with. Again this will ensure accuracy and provide the best results.

Is butter or a baking spread better for cupcakes?

Test the sugar again – this time the spoon is much clearer and the sugar liquid is fairly transparent. Leave it for couple more minutes and then bring the mixture to the boil and carry on boiling on a medium heat. Don’t be tempted to steer the mixture, it would crystallise it. Mine took about ten minutes until they were starting to melt and at that point I got them out and gave them a little top up, making sure that everywhere was topped up to the top of the spoon mould. We’ll definitely be making candy cane spoons again before Christmas and I’d love you to have a go too! Self raising flour, which is very commonly used in the UK where I am based, already contains a raising agent and a little salt too. Therefore if you want to swap it for plain or all purpose flour, you will need to add some baking powder and also a little salt if you like. Some people like to add salt to cake recipes and some don't, so I'll leave that up to you as it won't affect the bake. The general advice is to add 2 teaspoons baking powder (a measuring teaspoon, not the kind you stir your coffee with) per every 200g plain or all purpose flour. So for this recipe you'd need to add 1 + ½ teaspoons baking powder. Please note, I have not tested this recipe using plain or all purpose flour. Is butter or a baking spread better for cupcakes? The cupcakes will last for 2-3 days in an airtight container in a cool place. You can freeze both the cupcakes and the buttercream. To freeze them separately, wrap the cupcakes well in cling film or put them in an airtight container. The buttercream can be frozen in a sealed tub. To freeze them decorated, freeze the cupcakes on a plate until frozen solid, then carefully wrap in cling film. Remove the clingfilm when you take the cupcakes out of the freezer to defrost, as if they defrost with it still on it could damage the buttercream. Can you make the cupcakes with plain/all purpose flour?

You can even dip your candy cane spoons in a little melted chocolate and sprinkle on some of the crushed candy cane if you have any left. Each participant gets a wrapped candy cane. One person from each team fences the other using the candy cane. The first person with a broken cane loses the battle and the winner goes on to fence the next player. 19. Candy Cane Golf Play Party Plan/Candy cane golf via playpartyplan.com

Players put a candy cane in their mouth and see how many candy canes they can move from the table pile to a bowl in one minute using the candy cane in their mouth as the hook. The player who moves the most candy canes in one minute is the winner. 26. Who Stole the Candy Cane?
