Scott Hahn has delivered numerous talks nationally and internationally on a wide variety of topics related to Scripture and the Catholic faith. Hundreds of these talks have been produced on audio and video by St. Joseph Communications. His talks have been effective in helping thousands of Protestants and fallen away Catholics reembrace the Catholic faith. He is currently a professor of theology and Scripture at Franciscan University of Steubenville, and he’s the founder and director of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology. In 2005, he was appointed Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hahn is also the bestselling author of numerous books, including The Lamb’s Supper, Reasons to Believe, and Rome Sweet Home. Scott received his BA in theology, philosophy, and economics from Grove City College, PA, his Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and his PhD in biblical theology from Marquette University. He entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, 1986.

Each book of the Bible is preceded by a very brief but useful introduction that identifies the author, date of writing, audience, and the main themes. Where the Didache Bible truly excels is in its verse-by-verse commentary that is dependent upon and provides references to the Catechism. In addition to the commentary, there are numerous sidebars with paragraph explanations of key themes or ideas as well as longer “apologetical explanations” of major theological issues like “original sin,” “the formation of conscience,” and “the marks of the Church.” The commentary, sidebars, and explanations facilitate the reading of Scripture within the Magisterium of the Church. That said, there exists a spectrum of Catholic study bibles created by the scriptural translations and study tools. Although their differences present nothing like the range of options found in Protestantism, they can be important nonetheless. Let me share some thoughts on the most readily available Catholic study bibles on the market today.

This is because there are fewer translations that contain the full canon of Scripture (including the deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament), and the number of such bibles that include study tools is smaller. This is unsurprising; the large selection of Protestant study bibles reflects the number and diversity of Protestant beliefs.

When the Old Testament was revised, it was officially replaced by the New American Bible Revised Edition. The NABRE is a “formal equivalent” translation, which means it is not a literal word-for-word rendering of the original text but not a paraphrase either. The translation is most notably criticized for its avoidance of gender-indicative terminology whenever possible, including references to God.
