About this deal

In 2018, I grew my ‘Honeycomb’ tomato plants in containers of Dalefoot Composts Double Strength Wool Compost (these seeds were sown in containers of Dalefoot Composts Wool Compost for Seeds; then the seedlings were potted on into containers of Dalefoot Composts Wool Potting Compost. Finally, these tomato plants were potted into containers of Dalefoot Composts Double Strength Wool Compost. No fertiliser was used.) With the climate crisis bringing devastation and disruption to all corners of the world, the focus has rightly been on how we can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. And when it comes to gardening there’s one environmentally destructive practice we could do without.

If you’re interested in my Compost Trials, you can find all of the articles I’ve written about my Compost Trials, here. Many existing varieties of crop may struggle in the future with climate change so see what others are growing well in your area. Reach out to local gardening groups, share ideas and swap seeds. Plenty of sunshine makes plenty of sugar, mainly in the form of fructose which is found in the pericarp tissue of the tomato – that band of fruit flesh just under the skin. The acid content of the tomato is mainly found in the locular (pulp and seeds) centre of the fruit mostly in the form of citric acid with the actual amount influenced by the potash status of the plant. The best advice with peat-free composts is to use a well-researched, tried, and tested brand,' Victoria says. So, let’s welcome in winter with a celebration of rich harvests and warm suppers. Carve goulish faces on homegrown pumpkins, collect precious seeds and look ahead to a new growing season. The right balance of nutrients - a good seed or potting compost should have the right balance of nutrients to grow a range of plants during this stage of their development, whereas a multipurpose compost should be able to support plants at all growth stages. Remember that most composts only have enough fertiliser to last around four weeks, so after this you will need to add liquid feed or one of our Best controlled-release fertilisers . Last year, I sowed my tomato seeds in Dalefoot’s Wool Compost for seeds. It’s still too early to sow tomato seeds outside, but you can sow tomato seeds on a bright and sunny window sill or inside your glasshouse or polytunnel, now. As usual, I sowed my tomato seeds and started my tomato plants off inside my Access Garden Products Exbury Classic Growhouse. I took this photograph of some of my ‘Honeycomb’ and ‘Purple Ukraine’ tomatoes, on the 25th August 2019.

The answer is to keep the bed, or container or bag consistently moist. When in doubt this is done by the ‘feel test’. The surface of the compost may be dry but four to six inches down it may be wet, so gently feel down into the compost some 4 to 6 inches away from the stem, ideally 6 inches (but up to 8 inches deep) and take a scoop of compost. If it is saturated it has had too much water; if it is dry, too little, but if when squeezed water gently oozes out, it is spot on!Spirals are pushed into place and the plant planted close to them. Throughout the season all that is required once a week is the growing tip of the plant to be gently moved into the centre of the spiral, the plant does the rest of the work. We do not know what the season will bring each year, but a well supported plant should safely carry a very heavy crop. tbsp sugar (or other sweetener eg agave) - optional (I usually skip this part but I do like tart food)
