Last year, México produced 56.8 million tons of sugarcane making it the sixth largest producer in the world. And while México is internationally known for its tequila and mezcal, the fine rums coming out of México have gone largely unnoticed by the world rum scene.

Zajímavostí je fakt, že se při výrobě tohoto rumu používá voda z 300 metrů hluboké studny. Tato studna se nachází prý přímo pod palírnou. Údajně stojí právě ona voda za vyjímečnou chutí tohoto rumu. Výrobce tvrdí, že skvělá voda a výběr třtiny jsou základem jejich kvalitního rumu. Rum Deadhead zraje v sudech po sherry celkem 6 let. Sudy jsou dubové, což už je mezi rumy taková klasika a sázka na jistotu. However can it stand apart from other rums in regards to flavor? No opravdu nebude… Přiznávám totiž bez mučení – mám opravdu rád hlavně sladké rumy. A v poslední době vyhledávám sice také sladší, ale více osobitější a chuťově výraznější (výborný Barceló Imperial Onyx například, když si tak vezmu zpětně jednu z mých předešlých recenzí). Tento Deadhead rum mi už přijde na můj vkus dost hořký. Čím ale nechci říct, že někomu by nemohl v pohodě sednout (kdo řekněme víc inklinuje k sušším agricole rumům). Dobře, opravdu má faktor strašidelnosti 10, který ho odlišuje od všech ostatních rumů, pokud jde o láhev. Dokáže se však od ostatních rumů odlišit, pokud jde o chuť? Ne. Za prvé, barva je světle jantarová…, blíže žluté barvě některých jablečných šťáv. Má mírné aroma cukrové třtiny s přiměřeným množstvím trpkosti, které mi připomíná etanol. Chuť není špatná. Není skvělá, ale zasáhne vás určitou sladkostí a vanilkovými/kávovými tóny, které pak vyprchají do poměrně slušného hoření. Jelikož jde o směs šťávy z cukrové třtiny a melasy, má trochu agrikulturní nádech. Stárnutí mu dodává trochu dubové hořkosti. Značka Deadhead je jinak inspirována výjevy, které lze nalézt například ve městě Yaxchilán (bývalé významné mayské centrum), a které znázorňují chytání obětí a množství scvrklých hlav. Tsantsa, neboť takto se ty hlavy vlastně jmenují, se podle všeho uchovávaly jako trofeje a měly pro původní indiánské obyvatelstvo silný duchovní význam. Za originálním ztvárněním stojí Kim Brandi. Je to opravdu okouzlující dáma, pod jejímž rukama vznikly i další extravagantní značky jako KAH tequila (jedinečné ručně malované láhve ve tvaru lebky calavera) či Apocalypto Tequila. Já osobně ještě váhám, jestli k němu nepřidám i čokoládový rum Deadhead, pro změnu v láhvi ve tvaru opičí hlavy (kdyby byl levnější neváhám…). Tak jsem neodolal a pořídil jsem si tuhle mrtvou hlavu taky. Pokud zabrouzdáte na sociální sítě do rumařských skupin, tak je rum Deadhead rum 6 y.o. 40% mezi začínajícími rumaři poměrně oblíbený ale nechybí ani ve sbírkách již zkušenějšíchpijanů. Ta prapodivná láhev zkrátka láká ke koupi. Hodně fanoušků tohoto rumu se chlubí fotkou prazvláštní láhve ve své vitríně a jsou na ni často velmi hrdí. Jak ale Deadhead rum chutná, je to kvalitní rum hodný koupě, který může konkurovat oblíbeným rumům za podobnou cenu jako třeba Zacapa nebo Diplomatico? Láhev jako marketing Jakmile láhev otevřete a do rumové skleničky si nalijete tento rum, tak ucítíte mandle, kávu a čokoládu. A to poměrně výrazně. Když ke skleničce přičichnete blíž a začnete vůni zkoumat podrobněji, tak se začnou vynořovat ještě tóny anýzu, hřebíčku a lehce i karamelu. Je to opravdu zajímavá vůně, která vás nutí rum dál adál zkoumat.
