About this deal

For instance, while it is great that the printer nozzles can be swapped out for more printing options, the steps to do so are not well explained. Nor does the printer itself describe the full process for doing this. The safest way to change out the print head is to remove the filament from the machine. Then pre-heat the nozzle that's getting removed take it out, use the unclogging tool to clear the nozzle of any remaining filament before it cools. There’s also something to be said about the new filament spool holder installed into the side of the printer. The material bay has been expanded to fit 1kg spools with ease and even has its own transparent door. We felt a lot more confident commencing large overnight prints knowing we had ample ammunition in the chamber.

Now, should you probably go through the calibration process? Yes. Did I? No. It wasn't because I didn't want to. It was mostly because I didn't know about it since I wanted to start printing as soon as possible. I later calibrated the machine after many successful prints mainly just to experience what it entailed. Thankfully the Adventurer 4 walks through the process on the display pretty well.No tools are technically required to change out nozzles, but the knowledge of how to do it properly isn't provided with the machine. This is where the setup process gets a bit less hassle-free. Many 3D printers have a self-leveling feature, where the printer automatically detects the print bed using a sensor on the print head; on the Adventurer 4, though, you end up doing a lot of the work yourself. If you select the automatic bed leveling, the printer moves the print head to nine different spots on the print bed. At each, you use the touch-screen control to move the print head up and down by fractions of a millimeter until you can just slide an included piece of mylar between the print head and the bed, indicating that there is the required tiny gap between the two.

I approached setting up and using the Adventurer 4 as a complete newbie — because that's what I was. The latest addition to the FlashForge USA portfolio is the Adventurer 4. Intended as a successor to the previously launched Adventurer 3, the single extruder FDM system comes complete with several feature upgrades that make it an iteration worthy of attention. The combination of swappable print nozzles and a heated print bed means that the Adventurer 4 can handle a huge range of materials, from the standard PLA and ABS to more exotic materials like medical-grade Nylon, PETG or transparent materials such as T-Glase. The printer’s nozzles work up to 265℃, while the heated print bed can go up to 110℃, which also increases the number of printer materials the Adventurer 4 can support. Our two favorite benchmarks are the classic 3D Benchy boat and the All In One 3D Printer test. These two models should give us an overall impression of how capable the Adventurer 4 is with overhangs, spindly towers, and awkward geometry that can be a challenge to get right. We also began by using the printer’s and FlashForge’s default settings to see if you can plug in the Adventurer 4 and get printing or if you’ll need to tweak things before you have a usable machine. We found that tweaking the temperature settings solved the layering and bed adhesion issues, but our overhang concerns persisted.

A 2-way filter consisting of 80 x 80 mm HEPA 13 filter with activated charcoal reduces odours and pollutants. I'll go ahead and preface this review with — if you are looking for all of the nitty-gritty of what goes into 3D printing and the depth of settings that can be tweaked when using a printer, you will likely be disappointed. I was and still am a beginner in this space. So, if you are interested in 3D printing and want to get started, or experienced and want to learn about a new printer — I got you. The Adventurer 4 is equipped with a filament runout sensor. If you want to print a large object, you no longer have to worry about unfinished prints. As soon as the sensor detects that the filament is running out, you will be notified via the 4.3-inch touchscreen. Looking at the overhang section the test, which is designed to determine the angles at which the system is able to print without support structures, the Adventurer managed to print up to an impressive 60° without any problems. This is an exceptional result, especially for a notoriously difficult material like ABS. Unfortunately, we did run into some issues with the Z-axis here, as the nozzle clipped and broke off one of the overhang structures during the printing process. We suspect this was a hiccup with the printer’s bed leveling but didn’t run into the problem again with our other tests.

Lightning-fast print speeds, but there’s a catch

I also had issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. On the FlashForge Adventurer 4. For unknown reasons, this printer refused to connect to my Wi-Fi network. After numerous attempts and ensuring that the passphrase was correctly entered, I gave up and used the wired ethernet connection instead, which worked without issues. FlashForge Adventurer 4 review: Swappable print nozzles One of the FlashForge Adventurer 4’s unique features is that you can swap out the device’s print nozzle — the business end of the printer that melts the filament. The printer comes with four nozzles with different diameters for the hole that the filament comes out of. In addition to the 0.3 and 0.6mm options, you get two 0.4mm nozzles, one of which works at 240 ℃, and one that works at 265℃ for materials that need higher temperatures. You also have a free model database available and you can easily manage and monitor your printers online.
