Our hope it that our readers will be able to recognise, get to know and feel comfortable with wild plants, respect them and work effectively with them. Buy Now Thank you so much for the wonderful herb walk, all the wisdom you’ve shared and for so scrumptious tea and cakes! (2016) I was told about this book regarding a remedy for cystitis: couch grass (which worked in 2 days). I can't recommend this book enough. It’s the best book I have found. Very easy to follow, pictures, how to use the plants etc. I have been out nearly every day finding the plants. A must-have if you are serious in using natural plants for healing. *** Britain’s hedgerows and countryside abound with medicinal plants. People have always used local wild plants and herbs for food and medicine, but much of this knowledge has been lost. Julie Bruton-Seal is a practising naturopathic herbalist, iridologist and craniosacral therapist. A Fellow of the Association of Master Herbalists (AMA), she is also a writer, photographer, artist, silversmith and graphic designer.

They've done it again! I was slightly worried that this book wouldn't be as good as Hedgerow Medicine – a book I wouldn't be without. But it is ... full of plants that are not known as well these days medicinally (whereas Hedgerow Medicine is) but fascinating – full of facts from the past as well as up to date scientific research, recipes and great photos. Julie and Matthew complement each other fabulously in this book – highly recommended to the lay person and professional alike. *** This book offers a practical insight into the medicinal uses of local plants, showing clearly that we have our own medicine chest right on our doorstep – all we have to do is step outside! These are the herbs that are very commonly found on our waysides and verges, but in most cases very uncommonly used. As ever, Julie’s photography is beautiful. The recipes are enormously varied – lots of imagination and obviously tried and tested by the authors … This exciting and important book challenges us to look again at the wondrous array of native plants around us that we have forgotten how to use. Understand how to use some of these plants in first aid and how to use some plants for making medicines. As adults, we readily accept that oranges contains lots of vitamin C, and bananas contains lots of potassium, and with the correct teaching and guidance, children will readily accept that chamomile is soothing to the nervous system, peppermint can help to settle the stomach and comfrey can help heal wounds and scars. Providing a good foundation in plant education and herbal medicine will stay with children for the rest of their lives and even though they may not choose to become professional herbalists, they will have a good basic understanding of herbs and hedgerow medicine which is a wonderful gift that they will one day be able to share with their own friends and family.A practical 2 day workshop making teas, decoctions, infused oils, ointments, creams and other remedies. It is a richly illustrated guide to the wonderful healing mysteries of the common plants we may overlook when admiring our carefully cultivated garden roses, lilac or rhododendron blooms … Having read this book I find I walk in the countryside with new eyes and a far keener sense of observation, nibbling leaves and gathering seeds as I go. What a lovely day! Thanks so much for sharing it with us all. I am going home to distill yarrow now! (2022) Hedgerow Medicine is a wonderful book that all herbalists need. It embodies a heartfelt love of herbalism combined with clearly articulated scientific insights. I plan to get some schools here [California] using it and will promote it as much as possible. My absolute herbal inspiration nowadays is Julie and Matthew’s wonderful book, Hedgerow Medicine, which to my mind is the best home-use British herbal that has ever been written – such a beautiful, inspiring and empowering book! Thank you for opening my eyes! I have had a wonderful time, and met some lovely people. Thank you for welcoming me into your home (2014)It’s been a wonderfully calm, enriching and enlightening day. Thank you so much, Julie and Matthew. And the beautiful living food and delicious cake much appreciated. My body is singing! (2020) Each month the club focuses on one particular healing plant. Children are taught how to correctly identify the plant, about the origins of the plant name (both common and botanical names) and about the plant’s habitat and life cycle. Next, they look at the history and folklore surrounding the plant. This may include storytelling, songs and funny anecdotes. They then discuss the medicinal qualities of the plant, the primary constituents responsible for the healing activity, and the uses for the plant, both internally and externally. Children are encouraged to participate in the discussion, adding their own ideas and thoughts. What a fabulous week’s course! Filled with facts, delivered in a fun, hands-on way. Matthew and Julie have held the space beautifully, allowing the days to develop and giving us plenty of time to ask questions. I am very grateful for such marvellous guides. My herbal journey has had an auspicious start, around a kitchen table of new friends (2016) My absolute herbal inspiration nowadays is Julie and Matthew's wonderful book, Hedgerow Medicine, which to my mind is the best home-use British herbal that has ever been written - such a beautiful, inspiring and empowering book!
