The biggest change here is the introduction of Dolby Vision HDR, and in our testing we found the quality to be markedly better than that of non-HDR clips we shot, with footage looking more colorful and detailed. The perfect phone for those who prefer a smaller phone: wonderfully compact and a superb all-rounder

The display also measured up well in our technical testing. With a measured peak brightness of 640cd/m2 in auto brightness mode it’s going to be readable on the brightest of summer sunny days and its average colour accuracy Delta E score of 0.94 is also exceptionally good. As with the iPhone 12, you’re getting two 12MP cameras on the rear (a wide-angle and ultrawide angle) plus a 12MP “True Depth” camera at the front. Battery life will, ultimately, be the deciding factor for most people. This means that the iPhone 12 will remain the most practical choice. It’s more expensive, but its bigger screen and larger battery give it the edge for me. As with most recent iPhone models, the battery life has improved over older devices, but it still isn’t going to give you the best life. The display also supports the HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG HDR standards, with peak brightness of a claimed 1,200cd/m2. This matters less than it does on the larger screened iPhones, simply because you’ll probably won’t want to watch TV shows or movies quite as much on the mini, but performance is comparable. The iPhone 12 mini is a dainty (yet powerful) delight

This is something Apple already offers accessories for, and we’re sure to see more, both Apple and third-party in the future. It’s a worthwhile update, even if you don’t need to use the available accessories from day one. iPhone 12 mini display Apple’s cameras are among the most capable automatic shooters on the market, and the snappers on the iPhone 12 mini performed very well in our testing. The size of the device doesn't say much about the power of the iPhone 12 mini. In fact, it is quite disproportionate since its A14 Bionic chip is among the most powerful on the market. This processor, also found in the regular iPhone 12 as well as its Pro models, easily surpasses the Snapdragon 865, which is at the heart of many high-end smartphones on the Android side. On top of the fantastic A14 Bionic processor, the iPhone 12 mini is also outfitted with 4 GB of RAM. This means that even the most demanding apps and games run very smoothly on this smaller iPhone. Camera Modules The iPhone 12 mini comes running iOS 14.2 out of the box, so you've got all the benefits of the latest version of Apple's mobile OS, such as the App Library and home screen widgets.

The iPhone 12 mini’s design is its unique selling point, and it’s a welcome alternative for those who want a smaller iPhone, and who’ve looked on in dismay as Apple has released ever-larger handsets (but also don't want the dated-looking design of the iPhone SE, Apple’s other mini-sized phone). The 12 mini is still using a 60Hz display, so the scrolling experience isn’t as impressive as on some other phones that cost a similar amount – and if you’re swapping from a phone that does have a higher refresh rate, you’ll likely miss it here. It’s unlikely you’ll notice otherwise, but it’s a feature we’ve enjoyed seeing come to phones, and we’d like to see Apple implement it soon. iPhone 12 mini camera As for image quality, that’s pretty much the same as you get with the iPhone 12. It isn’t a world away in terms of quality from the iPhone 11. In low light, on the main camera, you’ll see slightly better colours and a cleaner image than you did before. In good light, however, there’s not an awful lot to choose between last year’s models and the iPhone 12 mini. Not that this is a bad thing as the iPhone 11’s main camera was already pretty good. We’ve previously seen this in the iPad Air, as well as the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, and it performs just as well here. We put the chipset through its paces with a variety of multi-tasking activities, and the A14 Bionic always managed to keep pace with everything we wanted it to do, including running graphically demanding games. Consequently, Apple has undertaken some serious groundwork in the past few years to narrow the gap, developing its own behind-the-scenes algorithms and technology that make it easier than ever to simply point and shoot to capture amazing images.

What’s surprising is that, despite the tiny 2,227mAh battery, the iPhone 12 mini lasted as long as it did in our video rundown battery test. 14hrs 28mins isn’t a particularly special result when most flagship Android phones these days approach and exceed the 20-hour mark with regularity but it is at least a better result than the iPhone SE, which couldn’t get past 12 hours.
