About this deal

The reference-level output provides you with 20dB of headroom at the listening position. The wide amount of headroom ensures that even the loudest mixes are translated clearly. The IN‑5’s high‑frequency performance is similarly well judged and does a competent job without drawing attention to itself. The benefits of the midrange/tweeter dual‑coincident format are very clear, with the IN‑5 showing strong image focus and really good consistency at different listening positions. Looks like our problem is that port resonance is too high and at a frequency where the woofer is already being rolled off. So as a result it causes those two bumps in the woofer response. The tweeter also has a rise above 10 kHz which seems to be diffraction based as it did not show up in off-axis response. The rear of the LP-6 features carefully tuned controls, providing compensation EQ settings to find the best possible sound. Kali Audio calibrated their EQ tuning at The Village Studios in Los Angeles. This combined with the low and high-frequency trims, ensures the studio monitor can adapt to any space.

The purpose of this test is to illustrate how much (if at all) the output changes as a speaker’s components temperature increases (i.e., voice coils, crossover components). One of the features present in the second wave of Kali monitors is a clever Boundary EQ adjustment, which provides several positions to select preset compensating EQ curves depending on where the speaker is positioned. On a stand in free space (the ideal position for the loudspeaker) the EQ can be disabled.This is a common issue with many active monitors, especially KRK and Presonus. When the glue ages it becomes electrically conductive and shorts the amplifiers, in the case of early KRK ‘Rokit’, often blowing the tweeter. The most unique part of Focal studio monitors, and usually the selling point, is the inverted-dome tweeter—this component offers multiple benefits. The inverted dome creates a wide listening sweet spot, unlike most other dome-based tweeters. You should be able to move around your listening position without losing much of the detail and defined stereo image that the Alpha 65s provide. Starting on the right, the filter at 965 Hz reduced some of harshness and opened the sound a bit. Bass was shy so I dialed up the 70 Hz broad filter. That filled in the bass quite nicely with no increase in distortion. With a pair of Kali Audio LP-6 studio monitors, you should be able to achieve a usable sound without expensive speaker calibration software and an advanced understanding of room acoustics and acoustic treatment. There has been some bad information about this, so we thought we'd clear some things up! The LP-6 and LP-8 and IN-8 do all hiss. The LP-8 is the worst of the bunch, about 2 dB worse than LP-6. IN-8 is the quietest, about 1 dB better than LP-6. In the entire time we've been making these speakers, we have not instituted any changes that would make this performance better or worse. We have done spot audits to see if any units were particularly worse than any others, and we have never found that to be the case. Both are two-way loudspeakers with 1-inch textile dome tweeters set within Kali’s custom 3D imaging waveguide. Unlike other waveguides which are a highly directive horn shape, with sharp angles designed to aid directivity but with a small sweet spot, the Kali waveguide is a gentle, gradual contour. Almost an ovoid, though wider than it is deep and with a sharper curve to the faces spanning the tweeter’s vertical axis. The result is an even dispersion that doesn’t adversely affect frontal imaging, but gives you a much wider listening sweet spot than you might be accustomed too with a typical waveguide arrangement. The intent is to cohesively blend the sound from them loudspeaker to the reflective sound that is result of physical obstacles, or even dispersion into the air itself, that occurs as the sound travels toward your ear. Nothing can image like a true coaxial speaker does, but the LP-series waveguide comes very close. A speaker’s given position in a space can drastically change it’s frequency response. A speaker placed against a wall or on a desk will sound very different than a speaker placed on a stand, even in a well-treated space. Hard surfaces like walls, desk tops, and recording consoles can change the low end frequency response of the monitor, and degrade the overall clarity of the sound. Vocal reproduction is excellent, male vocals particularly. Here, when compared directly to the PMCs I could only tell the two apart because of a little extra magic dust from the PMCs. However, the LP-6s did struggle a little as you reach further upwards.Vertical directivity gives more freedom than usual although I suggest you stay at or slightly below tweeter center:

Protective limiters prevent harmful voltage from ever reaching the drivers, so there is no risk of blowing these speakers. These have been updated for the 2nd Wave, allowing for 3 dB higher output. When we launched these products, we had two data points in mind: 1. the hiss was on par with our nearest competitor and 2. conversations with producers led us to think that the hiss would not be an issue. Indeed, for most people, it is not. However, for people mixing close to the speakers and in small and/or quiet rooms, it is noticeable. Output power is 40W for the treble and 40 / 60W for the midbass, LP-6 and LP8 respectively. Maximum listening distance is 2.9 m for the LP-6 and 3.6 m for the LP8. Kali’s maximum listening distance figures define the distance at which the speakers can maintain a continuous 85dB SPL with 20dB of dynamic headroom, allowing for large momentary peaks to be played at reference volume without overload or distortion.
