Due to the large size of a lot of log stores, you’ll benefit from having a power screwdriver and an extra pair of hands to help out. In terms of construction, this log store is a bit more interesting than the others featured here – it’s made from the wood of a Nordic Spruce (more commonly seen in its original tree form at Christmas!), which is generally stronger than pine.

As with all our products, we only use FSC approved sources for our pressure-treated timbers. This means that you can rest assured that your new log store will stand up to the test of time whilst still being an environmentally friendly option. As well as ensuring our timbers are durable, we also only use heavy duty fixings, including corrosion-treated screws to help make sure that your new log store remains securely fixed together and fully functional for many years to come. The cladding baton lengths specified in the cutting list don’t match the dimensions listed for the store. The side wall batons are stated at 0.72m but the actual dimension for the store are 0.65m (the length of the longer floor boards so the baton dimension need shortening to 0.65m. The cladding batons for the rear of the store are stated at 1.72m but the actual dimension needs to be 1.76m based on the length of the horizontal roof structure supports.For smaller spaces, it can help to look for a taller wood store that will keep a few more logs without expanding on the unit’s footprint. I made a few adjustments as I couldn’t get exactly the same timber (so used fence posts!) and as another one of your readers did, I added a 3rd front post so I could put in the kindling store bit. I also put the roof sloping the other way as thats the direction most of the weather comes into my garden. This way the logs will be dried by the warmth of the sun and ventilation from the draft, but they won’t have rain blown directly on them when the weather is bad. If you frequently burn through a large number of logs, you might struggle to keep enough close to hand for when you need them. Why Buy From Us?Cut two of the pieces into 1 X 1.76, 1 X 0.90, 1 X 0.56, and either (1 X 0.60 and 1 X 0.65) or 2 X 0.65 You don’t specify, but we felt it was best to use non-ferrous clout nails to attach the featheredge boards, aluminium in our case. We pilot drilled the holes using a 2.5mm bit as the nails were round. We didn’t for the first nail and it split the board, see above! Clout nail have a wide head to aid securing the featheredge boards, whereas the oval nails don’t have a large head and risk pulling though the timber a it dries and warps etc. Carbon steel (ferrous) nail will rust and weaken the roof. Logs with more than a 20% moisture content aren’t great for burning for several reasons: not only are damp logs hard to light, but they can cause more serious problems. Burning damp logs they can create a lot of smoke, as well as tar build up in the chimney, which can have health consequences as well as be dangerous in the home.

When it comes to protecting the logs inside, there is good ventilation provided by the raised, slatted base and gap out the top. The roof has a reasonable overhang on all sides to prevent rain from getting too near the logs as well. If you have an occasional fire during the evenings in winter, a small store will be sufficient. These normally have a capacity of less than 1 m³.

I wanted to thank you for posting your log store plans here, they’re really great and gave me the confidence to have a stab at it myself. I’ve never built anything like this before and it went very well by following your plans and looking at your photos of the build process. All timber materials used in manufacturing these storages are constructional grade and pressure treated, and all fixings provided are corrosion resistant. Timber is sourced from FSC-approved, sustainable sources, so as well as lasting for years you can be sure that it is environmentally sound too. Ideally you want to find the balance between the wood store being as open as possible, but protected from the elements! If the wood of the log store you’re looking at hasn’t been pressure treated, you should treat the wood yourself with water repellent sealer. This will need to be applied every 1 – 3 years to make sure the protection continues to work. There are few things more pleasant than the luxury of warming yourself by a log-burning fire in the depths of winter.

I thought that it might be useful to add to your “shopping list” a “chopping list”, because it has taken me a while to work out what lengths of wood to buy and the most efficient way to chop it up. Our garden stores are available in either solid feather-edge board or slatted gravel board finishes, so you will easily be able to find the right product to suit you. They are made with heavy duty fixings and high quality, pressure treated timber so that they are able to stand the test of time and last through season after season. Our heavy duty fixings are also corrosion treated so they won't let you down. It probably cost as much to build as buying one (including the cost of the nail gun) but it’s much more robust than any I’d seen beforehand.You might normally buy/cut wood and then just leave it out in the garden, elevated on pallets or simply resting on the floor. This can work ok for a bit, but if there’s any bad weather, or just general humidity (we do live in the UK after all!), these logs will get damp. All of our designs are made with over sized pressure treated(tanalised) timber. We actually use slow grown joinery grade timber so our materials are in a league of their own. Our stores are glued as well We didn’t have the luxury of a nailgun so used 60mm long oval nails in it’s place. Oval nails are a must as there’s a risk that round nails will split the timbers and should be used in the direction of the grain on the thinner boards.
