This is a wonderful volumen in the The Sandman run where the great storyteller, Neil Gaiman, unleashes his imagination to the fullest giving us the pleasure of reading four stories where anything can happen... I know a two-star review for story seems harsh but allow me to explain why I felt this title was a letdown. Although the first few chapters are generally related to each other and follow a linear story line, many of the subsequent chapters are told as stand-alone stories (especially near the end), they jump around the timeline and are largely unrelated to the main story told at the beginning of the book. Although these stories paint an interesting picture of a world that is classic Gaiman, on the whole I found them dull and could have stopped listening after the first half of this title.

So, I know this series is usually a bunch of short stories but previous entries always had some sort way to connect several of these stories into one larger picture story that felt really epic.You have changed, Oneiros. In 1999, Gaiman wrote The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, a novella illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. As in many of the single-issue stories throughout The Sandman, Morpheus appears in Dream Hunters, but only as a supporting character. In Gaiman's afterword to the book, he describes the story as a retelling of an existing Japanese legend. There is no trace of it in the primary source he cites, [37] and when asked, Gaiman has stated that he made up the "legend". The novel was later adapted into a four-issue miniseries by P. Craig Russell and released by Vertigo from January 2009 to April 2009. [38] [39] I remember reading this and thinking... "What? What the serious hell? You can make Shakespeare a character in a comic? This... this... I don't even..." Various film and television versions of Sandman have been developed. In 2013, Warner Bros. announced that a film adaptation starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in production, but Gordon-Levitt dropped out in 2016. In July 2020, September 2021 and September 2022, three full-cast audio dramas were released exclusively through Audible starring James McAvoy, which were narrated by Gaiman and dramatized and directed by Dirk Maggs. In August 2022, Netflix released a television adaptation starring Tom Sturridge.

I really never got anything that felt particularly epic and the stories that were delivered felt like the quality went down severely. None of these stories really felt like there was enough time for any tension to build up and none of the characters particularly stood out. What does the artistic muse dream about? She dreams about not being a muse, of course. She doesn’t want to exist for the purpose of another’s inspiration; she wants to exist for herself, and herself only. So she calls upon the lord of the dream world to come and save her from the confines of her existence.

Rereading this one in the summer of 2020. In midsummer, actually, in conjunction with Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, reading it, hearing it, and seeing a filmed production of it (soon). I did this because of the great issue in this volume focused on Midsummer Night's Dream. So it is really good to do this, as the play within a play from Shakespeare extends here to another frame; in other words, Dream watches the play within a play, and they all speak to each other.
